North Attleboro Council on Aging 204 Elm Street ♦ North Attleboro, MA 02760 ♦ Phone 508-699-0131 Newsletter July/August 201 7 FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR Rain, Rain and More Rain on its way……I just want to wear my new sunglasses and even when it is not raining, the sunshine has not lasted very long. I am so ready for warm, sunny days and spending time outside and at the beach. How about you, is the rainy weather getting you down? If so, stop by the Senior Center for a visit, participate in an activity or have lunch. It has been proven many times that isolation is not a good thing and getting out and socializing are the best things you can do. If nothing else, you can sit with others and complain about the rainy weather and enjoy the company of others. We have a Senior Center Summer Outing planned on Thursday August 24th. Seniors will be car pooling to Pawtucket, RI to take a boat ride on the Blackstone Valley Explorer. After the boat ride you can join others for lunch out at Spumoni’s Restaurant located in Pawtucket. The boat ride is 50 minutes and there are more details on this Summer Outing on page 5. NEXT Monitoring Alert Systems is our sponsor for our Ice Cream Social on Tuesday July 18th at 12:00. There are also plans for a cookout on Wednesday July 26th and to have Mickey G’s Clamshack back for chowder and clamcakes on Wednesday August 9th. We cook out but eat inside so you can enjoy the air conditioned dining room. Please look over page 4 as the Friends of the NACOA have many nice trips scheduled including an overnight Saratoga Christmas Tour on December 1st. We also have three special presentations scheduled, Tuesday July 25th at 12:30 Marion Manor is sponsoring a No Fuss, Low-Cal Summer Dessert Demonstration free of charge but you have to reserve your place as space is limited. On Wednesday July 26th at 11:00, Stacey Hiltner from Community VNA will be presenting Hydration and Sun Safety. Sarah Sheppard, Nutritionist from Bristol Elder Services will be here on Tuesday August 15th at 11:00 to discuss Myths and Facts on Diet and Nutrition. On May 17th the Senior Center had its Annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon held at The Tavern. This year’s theme was “Volunteers are the Heart of Our Team.” Since May 2016 our 34 volunteers have logged in over 2,760 hours, delivered 17,167 meals to our Meals on Wheels consumers and assisted us in serving 1,609 congregate lunches and 330 additional meals for special events. I want to especially recognize Carol Hood who has been a volunteer for 24 years and Dick Champagne who has volunteered for 23 years. Truly both dedicated and caring long time volunteers with a smile on their faces and kindness in their hearts. On the Council on Aging website we have our current newsletter, menu and calendar. Under News and Announcements we highlight programs and all of the JabberWalker’s scheduled walks as well as the Friends trips. During the sign up period for the Senior Tax Work-Off Program all the documents for completion can be printed from the website. Did you know that the Council on Aging has a Building Fund? Several years ago an anonymous donor made a $100.00 donation and wanted it to go to our Building Fund. We did not have a Building Fund at the time, so we established one. If you would like to make a donation you need to specify on the memo part of the check that it is for the COA Building Fund and make the check out to the Town of North Attleboro.
