Hello Spring Team Captains, The first match is just over a week away. There were days this winter when I was not sure if spring would ever get here! Before the matches officially start, I want to officially thank each and every one of you captains. As I have said many times before, we could not do this without you! Spring Team Matches are an essential part of the WGAM. This year there are 755 players on rosters from clubs that stretch from Captains to Longmeadow to Crumpin-Fox to Renaissance. Our matches are far-reaching in more ways than just the miles covered. Our handicap range all the way to 36. Some players have been participating for years and others are new. Every type of golf course participates: private, semi-private, resort, municipal, and daily fee. Personally, I am very proud of this inclusiveness. If we have learned anything in the past couple years, it is that golf needs to open its doors to more people. Fortunately, here in Massachusetts, the WGAM has been supporting women’s golf on many levels for many years. I admit that I get a little giddy when I think about 755 women getting dressed in the dark, usually in many layers, and heading to a golf course on five Thursdays each spring. I know that they are all very different but I know that they have so much in common. And I know that their common denominator is more than golf. It is about comradery, competitiveness, sisterhood, athleticism, a spirit of adventure and, yes, a love of chasing a little white ball around even in the cold. Mostly, I am proud of the WGAM: the officers, the captains and the players alike for taking on this almost monumental task every year. It takes a lot of work, communication and commitment. I hope that the 2015 Spring Team Matches are the best ever! Now, down to business, I have a few details to relate to you all. 1. Lunches: Players are expected to stay for lunch. Simple as that. We encourage captains to ask their food/beverage staff to have a “to go” option. If a player really cannot stay they should purchase the “to go” lunch. 2. The #1 reason Spring Team issue is: A player plays in the wrong place. Please make sure that you check the NOV. 1st handicap index and send off players from low to high every time! (Subs do not automatically go in the spot of the player they are replacing.) 3. Electronic score sheets will be sent out next Monday. As long as you have Microsoft EXCEL, you will be able to update these forms with your correct players. You can always send the names of subs (and who they are replacing!) to Susan by Monday morning. 4. Photo Contest Themes: Photos or Short video clips should be sent to: [email protected] We actually bought some prizes this year! Week One: Hairstyle Appreciation Day (It’s true, I could not make this up!) Week Two: Derby Hat Day Week Three: Star Wars Day or Dance Like a Chicken Day (Again, truth is stranger than fiction.) Week Four: Armed Forces Day Week Five: Dress up as your favorite TV Show –past or present. Remember we are here at the office to support you. Don’t hesitate to call us if you have any questions. If you are a new captain, contact other captains in your cup for any guidance you might have. Experienced captain? Please help out any new captain in your cup. Sincerely, Cathleen Beach
