Organized by:
MIZORAM POLYTECHNIC, LUNGLEI
Mizoram Polytechnic, Lunglei at a glance in
Mizoram: Mizoram Polytechnic, Lunglei is situated
at Lunglei which is nearly 340 km away from
Silchar. This is the first technical institute established
in Mizoram with intake of 60 students in three years
diploma course in civil engineering in 1981 by the
Government of Mizoram. Later on another three
disciplines namely electrical engineering, mechanical
engineering, and computer science & engineering
were established in 1986, 1991 and 2001
respectively. The computer science & engineering
was established during Tech-Ed-III (2001-2006). The
intake capacity in mechanical engineering, electrical
engineering and computer science & engineering are
respectively 20, 30 and 30.
At present, the institute is approved by All
India Council for Technical Education vide
No.r.21/ero/98/1726, 01, 9th July 1998 and
administered by the Directorate of Higher &
Technical Education. The Mizoram State Council for
Technical Education gives advice to the Govt. of
Mizoram for the Welfare and Management of the
Institute.
The Institute’s Campus flung over an area of
about13.6 acres of hillocks, beyond which it is
enveloped by scenery of beautiful mountainous
natural repertoire, putting up a background for an
ideal environment for the students to prosecute their
studies in an atmosphere congenial to their body and
mind. A regular Institution Bus Service plies between
Lunglei Town and Hrangchalkawn (where the
Institute is locating). Students are provided with
residential accommodation one Assam Type single
storey Girls’ Hostel and one RCC Building for Boys’
Hostel. Active steps are being taken to renovate the
staff quarters so that majority of the teachers will be
able to reside at the campus.
Mizoram polytechnic, Lunglei is approved
by the AICTE and is an ISO 9001:2008 certified
Institute. Under an ISO certification, Mizoram
polytechnic, Lunglei has been conducting timely
audit of its departments and collecting feedback from
students on regular basis for the improvements in
quality of management & teaching –learning
processes. The institute is ready to go for the NBA.
The seminar: The safety and acceptability of many
widely used solid waste management practices are of
serious concern from the public health point of view.
Such concern stems from both distrust of policies and
solutions proposed by all tiers of government for the
management of solid waste and a perception that
many solid waste management facilities use poor
operating procedures. Waste management practice
that currently encompasses disposal, treatment,
reduction, recycling, segregation and modification
has developed over the past several years. Before the
recent situations, produced wastes were handled by
their producers using simple disposal methods,
including terrestrial dumping, dumping into both
fresh and stream or river waters and uncontrolled
burning. In spite of ever-increasing urbanization in
Mizoram, the dumping of solid waste, particularly in
landfills, remains a prominent means of disposal and
implied treatment. Major developments have
occurred with respect to landfill technology and in
the legislative control of the categories of wastes that
can be subject to disposal by land filling. Even so,
many landfills remain primitive in their operation.
Alternative treatment technologies for solid waste
management include incineration with heat recovery
and waste gas cleaning and accelerated composting,
but both of these technologies are subject to criticism
either by environmentalists on the grounds of
possible hazardous emissions, failure to eliminate
pathogenic agents or failure to immobilize heavy
metals, or by landfill operators and contractors on the
basis of waste management economics, while key
questions concerning the effects of the various
practices on public health and environmental safety
remain unanswered. The probable and relative effects
on both public health and environmental safety of
tradition and modern landfill technologies will be
evaluated with respect to proposed alternative
treatment technologies.
Further, open dumping is detrimental to the
natural beauty of a town or city; because when it is
visible from roadside, is aesthetically unpleasing. The
chemical and other contaminants found in solid
wastes can seep (leakage) into our ground water and
if it rains, these solid wastes can be carried to the
rivers and lakes which are the main sources of
drinking water and thus it is required to think that
how we can get the safe drinking water.
SCIENTIFIC SESSIONS
The two days seminar shall invite the delegates from
all over the country including guest/invited speakers,
