why get involved?
“Did you see what she was wearing?”
“Was she asking for it?”
“Had she been drinking?”
As long as you stand by, taking your cues from a culture which validates this type of
question, you are blaming the victim, and you are part of the problem. Instead, be part of the
solution by participating in GBMC’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®. This one-mile walk educates
about rape, sexual assault, and gender violence, spreads the word about GBMC’s services
for victims, and shows support for those affected. Many of them are your peers.
College campuses (even yours) carry elevated risks for sexual violence. The problem is so
pervasive that among undergraduate students, 23.1% of females and 5.4% of males have
experienced rape or sexual assault through physical force, violence, or incapacitation.
Unfortunately, because of the shame associated with rape and sexual assault, these crimes
are overwhelmingly brushed under the rug. The ACLU estimates that 95% of sexual assaults
on college campuses are not reported to the police. Reasons range from being embarrassed
and scared to fearing retaliation. Sometimes victims truly don’t think their “personal matter”
is important enough to report, or worse, they fear the perpetrator getting in trouble. Though
the majority of victims are women, the stigmatic barriers are even tougher for male victims or
victims of same-gender assaults.
This cultural indifference and denial cannot continue. It’s up to you as leaders on your
college campus to put a stop to these chilling statistics and break the silence about sexual
assault and rape on your campus. Victims need advocates like you for support, but they also
need access to the proper avenues to reclaim justice, security, and a sense of wellbeing after
an attack.
In 2016, GBMC’s SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examination) and Domestic Violence
programs assisted 338 victims of domestic and sexual assault with crisis counseling and
advocacy support. These programs provide free confidential services that are available
to everyone, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Forensic nurses perform detailed medicalforensic examinations, documentation, and collect forensic evidence to be submitted to the
Baltimore County Police Department Crime Lab. Victims are treated compassionately and
respectfully — they are believed.
Support GBMC’s services, which are so vital to the safety of your fellow students, by
registering for Walk a Mile in Her Shoes today. Form a team, fundraise, and be part of the
solution, not the problem. Raise $200 by March 21 for your choice of either red high
heels or red Converse sneakers to walk in.

To a Peer:
Dear ________,
Sexual assault. Rape. You may not hear about these issues on our campus a lot, and
that’s part of the problem because they are happening at an alarming rate. Unfortunately,
95% of victims aren’t speaking up and reporting these crimes because of shame. They’re
embarrassed and scared, and it’s up to us to be their allies.
Please join me and (insert fraternity, sorority, or other group name here) as we march to
stop rape, sexual assault, and gender violence by participating in GBMC’s Walk a Mile in
Her Shoes event on April 22. Not only does this one-mile fun walk help shatter the stigmas
associated with these crimes, it educates our community about the resources provided by
GBMC’s SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examination) and Domestic Violence programs.
These programs provide free, confidential services that are available to everyone, 24 hours a
day, 365 days a year, and they deserve our support.
Get started by visiting www.gbmc.org/walkamile to register. (If you already have a team name,

Thanks for joining me for this powerful event.
To a Family Member/Out-of-Towner
Dear ________,
When I left for college, you probably didn’t know that I’d be at an increased risk of sexual
assault during my first and second semesters. In fact, college freshman have the highest rate
of nonconsensual sexual contact via physical force or incapacitation.
I’d like you to help me be part of the solution. I’m participating in GBMC’s Walk a Mile in Her
Shoes event. The walk spreads awareness about rape, sexual assault, and gender violence
and educates the community about the resources provided by GBMC’s SAFE and Domestic
Violence programs. These programs provide
free confidential services that are available to
everyone, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Please help me fundraise for this event by
donating to my team page. Visit www.gbmc.
