New 0-20 Game Starts Feb 23
Your San Jose Bridge Club is listening to your
requests! Another new beginner bridge game will be starting
on Monday Nights, limited to those with under 20
Masterpoints.
Food at 6:15pm, lesson 6:30pm, and game at 7pm. Only
two hours of playing means this group ends by 9pm.
Cost = $8.
Have more than 20 MP's? You can play in the Monday
night Open game at 7pm, which plays 24 boards, has hand
records, and ends by 10:30pm. This group gets the credit for
all of the beginners who are playing. for more information, call
Wendy @408-807-4596 or Judy C@796-8281.

That’s more like it! Just before the President’s Day
regional, we had 15 teams for our monthly unit game. My
team was number 1. No, we didn’t win (far from it), we just
bought the first entry. The winning team was Will Watson,
Leila Sink, Rich Jasper and Frank Smoot. There was a threeway tie for first in the B stratification. In no particular order,
Michael Bodell, Allan Malloy, David and Wendy Fotland; Doug
Hong, Peggy Sprague, Joel Koransky and Ken Rosenfeld;
and Rita Tingley, Sabina Siem, Mike Slattery and Robert
Frohman.
Eileen Kotecki again provided great snacks. If you just
come for the food, you should be satisfied. Mich Ravera as
director went the extra mile and gave us predealt hands,
making it a fairer contest, as well as a colorful new
assignment chart. The hands were another ongoing benefit of
so many members having contributed to the garage sale that
resulted in the purchase of the dealing machine.
Next month, on the evening of March 9, our stratified
pairs unit game will honor our mini-McKenney and Ace of
Clubs winners for 2008, with the leaders in each category
getting a free play. Come out to pay your respects and to
challenge them.
On March 27, Carole Dietz will be holding a pro-am
game. Please sign up at the club ahead of time and identify
yourself as a “pro” (anyone who is a Life Master) or an “am”
(anyone else). It’s a lot of fun for both sides, sharing your
experience if you have experience to share. There’s a big
interest in learning bridge. Wendy Dewell and Judy Clark have
brought in 8 tables worth of players interested in their
Easybridge! game on Monday night, and Faye Parsons has
been teaching supervised play classes of 11 tables at a
nearby school.
Judy and Wendy have also been cleaning up the club,
organizing the game records and notices on the walls, and
tidying up otherwise. They aren’t your mothers, however, or
your maids, so please do your share when you come to the
club and clean up after yourself. Most of us have some spare
time between rounds and waiting for scores at the end of a
game. Spend a minute bringing your coffee cup to the sink,
throwing out the napkin and plate you used, and picking up
that pencil that fell on the floor.
At the last District 21 board meeting, Dan Turkus received
a goodwill award and pin for all the time he devoted to setting
up for sectionals, volunteering at the partnership and
hospitality desks of regionals, playing with people needing
partners, and all with a smile and a quip. Are you going to get
the next one?
Pro-Am Game 3/27 by Carole Dietz
Friday night, March 27th will be a Pro-Am game. A Pro
is anyone attaining Life Master status and an Am is anyone,
not a Life Master.
LM's please try to remember what it was like when you
were trying to advance your standing. One night, three hours
of your time, could make a huge difference in someone's first
step toward "Life Masterhood."
A sign up sheet will be on the wall in the Upcoming Events
are.. Please sign up to be a part of this evening.

Hacking It in Tough Times
by Jeff Hack
The average age of ACBL members has recently passed
68 years. Based on that fact alone, one would expect a large
percentage of our membership to be retired. This is one of
the worst economies in a long time. How have our retired
membership been able to cope with the tough economic
times? If you are invested in stocks or similar investments,
that portion of your wealth is down a lot. If you are invested in
fixed income the government has lowered interest rates so
low that it’s nearly impossible to get a decent return on your
fixed income without taking risks. And housing prices have
dropped considerably. I always felt that in the worst case
scenario I could take out a reverse mortgage. Anyone who
has found a solution to these problems please send it to me
via e-mail ([email protected]). I'd like to pass it on to our
membership.
Santa Clara Valley Spring Sectional
April 3, 4, and 5!
Save the Date! Our Unit 507’s spring sectional is coming
rd
th
up April 3 through April 5 .
Location: This year’s spring sectional returns to the
Masonic Temple, 2500 Masonic Drive, San Jose, the best
sectional location Unit 507 has ever had due to its large facility
and free and large parking lot.
Events: On Friday, April 3rd the tournament kicks off with
pair games at 2 and 7:30 PM. On Saturday, there will be Open
as well as Limited Pair games; the first session begins at 1
PM and the second session begins at 7 PM. On Sunday the
tournament concludes by holding a seven round, eight boards
per round, Swiss Teams event with the first session beginning
at 10:30 AM.
Please bring a dish: Please sign-up on the sign-up sheet
posted on the Bulletin Board at the San Jose Bridge Center to
contribute a food dish. Note: if you forget to sign up you can
still bring food but knowing in advance how many people will
be bringing dishes helps the Unit in its planning.
Food and Hospitality Committees: If you are interested
in helping the Food Committee or in manning the
tournament’s Hospitality booth please sign-up on the sheet
posted in the San Jose Bridge Center or contact Shirley
Foreman, Tournament Coordinator, at 408 536-2827 or
[email protected].
Sunday Twilight is now Invitational
The Sunday Twilight game is now inviting back all players
who have played in the game recently and players who are
courteous to all players to come join in the game. For an
invitation, contact Faye Parsons at 408-378-4719.
Idioter’s Corner
I’ve heard it said that, if it doesn’t admit of repeating, it
probably shouldn’t have been said in the first place.
This month, I am intentionally rerunning edited promotions
for our sectional and for the Pro-Am game.

Monthly Potluck: 4:30 pm
All games are held at the San Jose Bridge Center (408-871-1232) at one W. Campbell Ave, Room J-68, inside the
Campbell Community Center except those identified as “at Oakwood”. The Oakwood game is held at the Oakwood
Garden Apartments, 700 Saratoga Ave, San Jose. All games allow methods and systems permitted by the ACBL
General Convention Chart. Those games identified as “Mid-Chart” or “Super Chart” also permit methods authorized by
those charts with proper disclosure. Check club postings, visit our web site at http://www.SJBridge.org or call for the
exact dates and times of the Special STaC and Special Unit games, and of the 499er Potluck.
Games are often reduced, relaxed, or cancelled during local tournaments.
