Pictured: Pictured: The Sponsors Day Winning Team - our Auditors, Johnsons MME, (L-R) Luke Drummond, Stephen Byrns, George Lee and Ryan Giles. At last I have had my first game of golf since June as a result of the wet weather and my broken finger. I teamed with Linda and Ian Butler from WAW Credit Union and our own Peter Martin (who for a bowler hits a very nice golf ball) at the annual Sponsors Golf Day. This is the one day when the Board on behalf of members can thank the Sponsors for their continued support in all manner of ways to the Club. Although members see Sponsor’s advertisements in the Newsletter a full list of Sponsors will appear later in this edition. The winning team this year was our Auditors, Johnsons MME, comprising of Stephen Byrns, Luke Drummond and Ryan Giles teamed up with our very own Bowler George Lee (who also hits a very nice ball!). Johnsons MME took out the win with 60 off the stick and a nett score of 52 3/8. On Monday night I had the privilege to host on behalf of the Board, the Directors and Life and Distinguished Members Annual Dinner. This year the heads of our various committees were invited, and it was the opportunity for us to acknowledge the magnificent contribution The highlight of the evening was an entertaining address given by Life member #3 Mick Morris (pictured below) who gave a short history of the Club from the old racecourse to the club as it is today. Mick mentioned that the trustees of the racecourse agreed that the Club pay 68 pounds per year plus 1 pound per year for the use of the buildings. Pictured: The Golden Pavilion Restaurant catered for the Life and Distinguished members dinner with beautifully presented Honey Chicken made by the Life and Distinguished members to our great Club over the years and to thank the heads of each committee for their great efforts and the extra time they have given in establishing the committees. At the dinner we had the opportunity to meet Steven, Mark, Sam, Mei, Suki and the team at our new Chinese Restaurant (pictured below). A great meal was delivered to everyone at the dinner. Thanks to Stephen and Mark. Pictured (L-R): Suki, Mei, Sam, Mark and Steven being welcomed and thanked for the special Life and Distinguished Members dinner by Club President, Graham Gould The 68 acres comprising the course was finally purchased by the Club in 1964 for the price of 7,000 pounds and 385 pounds for the buildings to be paid over a period of 28 years at 4% interest. In 1974 an additional 20 acres of land was purchased for the sum of $30,000. This land is where the Bowling Greens and Resort are situated today. A history of the club from 1928 to 1983 written by Life Members the late Pat Salmon and the Late Arnie Grace can be purchased from reception. On Wednesday I was invited to the Women Bowlers Christmas luncheon. They may be small in number, but what lovely ladies they are. I was fed a delicious meat and salad lunch. I cannot name which lady supplied what, but I must rave about Margaret Bourne's curried eggs! Unfortunately I had to return to work as the sweets were arriving at the table and missed what was a great selection of mouth watering dishes. Probably just as well I had to go otherwise I would have ruined my boyish figure. Pictured: Sophie admiring President Graham Gould’s painted face Last Sunday I was privileged to be at the BBQ held to thank the volunteer workers. It is said that "behind every great man there is a great woman" and similarly behind every great Club are great Volunteer workers. Approximately 50 volunteers who support the Club in the following areas; Working Bees, Bus Drivers, Raffle Ticket Sellers, House Committee, BBQ Chefs, Returning Officers, Community Coaches, Golf, Bowls and Croquet committee were at the BBQ. I, on behalf of the Board of Directors acknowledge and thank them for their support. A successful Christmas Toy Raffle was held on the 4th December, and the Saturday meat raffles continue to be a success. The Club has been busily upgrading the kitchen facilities with thanks to Dale Mount from Southern Stainless and Andrew McNamara for the plumbing work. It is always challenging to get renovations in place just before Christmas and Andrew and Dale have been very accommodating. Mark and Stephen now have all the equipment they need to allow them to serve their great quality food. Pictured: Karie Lowe also contributed to the $405 received for the Junior program in the raffle and donations at the Volunteer’s BBQ Thanks very much for the feedback we have received from members and we will continue to make improvements in this area. Finally may I on behalf of the Board of Directors and Management thank all Members, the Staff, Resort Managers, Superintendent and his staff and the Director of golf and his Staff for their continued support during what has been a difficult winter and to wish everyone A VERY MERRY AND HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A VERY PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR. As far as the sporting side of the Club is concerned, the various golf days are well patronised and Croquet continues to grow, thanks to Graeme Haynes and his team. Season greetings to all! As the number of players slows down between the Christmas and New Year period; the tee sheet will be a one tee start off the first tee, excluding Tuesday which will be a regular two tee start. Monday, Thursday and Friday will be Medley Events. January 2nd: Additional competition On January 2nd we have the Howlong Veterans playing a competition with a Shotgun start at 7:53am. These open spaces will be for competition players only with a 7:53am shotgun start. Bookings can be made online or by calling the Golf Shop from Friday December 23rd onwards. Bookings for non competition play will after 12:15pm. Local Rule Addition th On December 8 the R&A announced that from 1st January 2017 competition committees will be permitted to introduce a local rule that waives a penalty when a ball is accidentally moved on the putting green. from $6 to $7. Mid January we will have available Demo drivers in the range in both mens and ladies flex, so you can try before you buy along with irons. You will find a detailed explanation of the modifications and impact by Ken Walton in this newsletter. Arriving sooner rather later for the ladies will be a small taste of the Jamie Saddock ladies apparel line with garments that can be worn on and off the course. If you have any questions regarding the rule changes or any rule matter, please ask the golf shop staff. Competition Fees The Board has decided upon increasing the $12 competition fee to $13. Pictured: James Walker in his set up position after some coaching from PRO Gavin Vearing “Golf is 50%mental, 40% set up and 10% swing.” in the shoulders, was standing way to close to the ball, and had a very strong right hand grip (hands too far to the right). - Jack Nicklaus Last Saturday I had a game with Rorey McNamara, James Walker and Michael Walker. It is always good to get out and have a game with the young guns at the club. James has tremendous potential with his game, already down to a 4 handicap at 14 years of age. The following day I gave Rorey, James and Michael a lesson. To help James to become an even better golfer it was very obvious that he needed to improve a few areas of his golf game. The single most important observation was that James needed to improve his set up position. As you can see in the first photo, James had very average posture at address, he was too rounded From this set up position James was always going to fight hitting a big hook, or blocking the ball straight out to the right, (plus potential upper back injuries later in life if he hits lots of golf balls.) With all my lessons I use a software program called Dartfish on my iPad, to view swings. It is very useful for golfers to be able to see for themselves what they are doing, rather than me just standing on the range and telling golfers what to do. I showed James where he was with his set up, at the start of the lesson and showed him a drill to improve his set up position. To view this drill click on http:// golfcoaching.com.au/full-swing/ or go to my website www.golfcoaching.com.au then go to the full swing tab. 133,000 kms, excellent condition $11,500 Call Gavin on 0403 058 368 Selling golf clubs as no longer able to play golf Call Barry on 02 6026 5937 All buggies and clubs can be sold separately Mens Round 14 golf bag with a set of Ping golf clubs and a buggy ($2,000 new) Provide your best offer Bronsnan Bag $100 or near offer Womens Par Maker (self propelled*) buggy , includes charger and a complete set of golf clubs - best offer Buggy $95 or near offer *needs a battery ($150) When working with James on this drill we went across to the clubhouse and used the reflection in the window so he could see exactly what he was doing. green and have no obstacles in front of you (bunkers, long grass), I highly recommend using the putter. I highly recommend practicing in front of a mirror or using the reflection in the window so you can see what you are doing. Jack Nicklaus said that "The key to good golf was not by increasing your number of good shots, but by reducing your number of bad shots." On many occasions what we think we are doing and what we are really doing is totally different. On most occasions your worst putt is going to be a lot better than your worst chip. As you can see in the second photo, James made some fantastic progress and he is now on his way to becoming a better golfer. If you are chipping well, stick to chipping, but if you hit a couple of bad chips and lose a bit of confidence, you may have to resort to plan B, and use the putter until the chipping improves. Young Rorey Mcnamara is a fantastic young kid who is a real character at the club. Unfortunately Rorey did not have his best game, but there were a couple of reasons for this. Rorey also has a very strong grip, (hands too far to the right). When the hands are too far to the right on the club, the tendency is to hit big hooks, especially under a little bit of pressure. Although we can't really call Michael a young gun at the club, (sorry Michael) he was great fun to play with. (Michael is James’ Dad.) Michael had the opposite problem to James and Rorey in that he had a big slice. The reason Michael had a big slice was partly because of his grip, but it was mainly because of his set up. Rorey hit a lot of big hooks and played too many shots from out of the left trees which cost him a lot of shots. Golfers pay a lot of attention to where their feet are aiming, but in my opinion it is more important to pay attention to where the shoulders are aiming. During Sundays lesson we improved Rorey's grip so his hands were sitting more 'neutral' on the club. Michael's feet were aimed at the target but his shoulders were 10 to 15 degrees open (aiming left). To view how to grip the club correctly click on http://golfcoaching.com.au/full-swing/ or go to my website www.golfcoaching.com.au then go to the full swing tab (second video). When the shoulders are aiming left it creates an out in swing path which in most cases, causes the ball to slice. Although Rorey hit a few shots out to the right initially, he was able to quickly grasp the importance of having a good grip and he was able to hit the ball consistently straighter by the end of the lesson. The other observation for Rorey was to take note of a few of the “veterans” of the club who use their putter from off the green. With the conditions of the fairways at Howlong being so good if you are within 10 meters of the By squaring up Michael's shoulders, and learning how to “release” his hands correctly, Michael was able to hit the ball a lot straighter and was even able to hit some nice controlled hooks by the end of the lesson. Thanks to all the members at Howlong for their support during the year. It is nice to be back following my passion of being a Golf Professional. Have a great Christmas and New Year! Our final trophy for the year was completed on the 10th of December with Vaughan Saunders winning the Medal of Medals playoff from the unlucky Neville Brown. Neville continued his great form, however losing 4 strokes from his handicap in a month proved the telling factor with Vaughan winning by 3 strokes. Playing off a handicap of 1 it is never easy to win these events but Vaughan played a near flawless round to take out the trophy. The McRae Summer Series first 3 rounds have produced several great contests with the majority of teams still in the hunt for a finals berth with 4 rounds remaining. th The next round is on Sunday 8 of January and by the end of January we will have a better idea of which teams will playoff. If such movement occurs the ball is to be replaced and played from its original position. The rule applies to accidental movement only and all other rules pertaining to ball movement on the green will still apply. This is a sensible change and covers off one of the many anomalies contained in the Rules of Golf. With Christmas upon us on behalf of the Women's Match Committee we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and safe New Year. Gail O’Halloran Chairman Womens Golf The Rules and Handicapping committee have considered the issue and will introduce the change from 1st January 2017. Howlong’s A group have won the 2016 Odewahn Shield after a good two days of finals at the Oaklands RSL Bowls Club. In the first semi-final on the Saturday they beat the Howlong B group, who also won their division, comfortably by 14 shots. Kel Smith’s rink registered a good win to keep the match alive for the B group. On the Sunday the A Group got away to a flyer with Jeff Brundell’s rink putting on a great start and setting up the space for the other two rinks to play into and this was necessary as both Phil Slater and Bob Schneider were well down early in their matches. This tops off what has been a truly great year for the Men’s Bowling Club as they put three teams into the A&DBA 2016 pennant competition winning flags in the grade 4, Grade 6 and beaten in the grade 7 final by just 3 shots. It is to be hoped that we can again replicate those results in 2017. It will be more difficult as all teams have moved up one grade and finding the increase in competitive skills will be the testing material. The selectors have done a great job over the last year and it is to be hoped that they can replicate their good work in 2017. However Phil’s side recovered to score an impressive win and Bob’s side came back to lose by just three shots. Thank you Ribs (Doolan), Keith (Truin), George (Lee) and Roy (Streeter) for making the tough calls and wearing the reactions from the members. In an interesting aside John Boyd, the current club Men’s singles champion is putting up an impressive run to capture all of the club titles available to him this year/season and has already collected the Mixed Pairs (with Jennie Bourne), the Men’s Triples (with Wally Bourne and Ken Buchanan) and he is in the finals of the Men’s Sets and Consistency which will be decided on the weekend of the 7th and 8th January 2017. After that the season will complete with the Men’s Pairs and Singles championship. We wish him well in his quest but know he will face some strong opposition along the way. The finals of the Men’s Sets will be played on the 7th and the final of the Men’s Consistency will be played on the 8th of January. The selectors have also called for a full practice match for all pennant players commencing 4.30pm on the 7th of January and any ladies wishing a game should bring their bowls and they will be fitted into the practice group as we will no doubt have a couple of spaces due to the impact of the Holidays. This has been my first year as Bowls Manager and it has been busy and rewarding and I extend my thanks to my deputy Ron Furness and Treasurer Duncan Chappell for their willingness to do anything and to the men’s bowls committee for making things run. A reminder to the eleven ladies who have their names down to play Pennant in 2017, no doubt you will be asked to practise during January, to assist in the selection of the eight-member Grade 2 Side. Members are wished a very Happy Christmas and enjoyable and safe New Year’s Eve.
