Density of Water Lab
In previous labs we have measured the density of various substances. Today we’re going to calculate
the density of water using two different methods.
Materials:




Density cube set
Beaker
Calculator
Paper towels
Method #1 – Estimation
The first method involves using our density cubes to test the general range of values density must be in.
We will do this by seeing whether each of the cubes floats or sinks:


If it floats, it has a density less than water.
If it sinks, it has a density higher than water.

2) Your guess based on this range:

Method #2 – Calculation
The second method will be to use the strategies we’ve learned before to calculate the density of water.
1) Mass of water:
2) Volume of water:
3) Density of water:
Conclusions:
1) Combining your two estimates, what do you think the density of water is?
2) Do you think it is a coincidence that the density of water has this value?
