LESSON PLAN: CONNECTING BETWEEN MAJORS AND

LESSON PLAN: CONNECTING BETWEEN MAJORS AND CAREERS AND
DETERMINING AN ACADEMIC AND CAREER PATH
1) Self Knowledge as Learner and Major Exploration Assignment #1 is
designed to help students explore their major OR help students get closer to
deciding on a major.
a. Give students time in class to discuss their assignment with another
student and then share the main points of their discussion with the rest of
class. Ideas for pair discussion questions: What did you learn from this
assignment? What new or interesting information did you learn about
your major, or potential major?
2) Self Knowledge as Learner and Major Exploration Assignment #2 helps
students explore career paths. Career paths are not mapped one-to-one to
academic majors. In fact, any major can prepare you for multiple careers.
Almost every career includes people who majored in diverse academic fields. It
is not uncommon for students to change majors several times during college as
their interests develop and they are exposed to new areas. We are a unique
blend of personality, interests, talents and abilities, values, and of course,
limitations. Learning about YOU through self-explorations is a CRITICAL step in
making realistic academic and career decisions.
Students were asked to spent time exploring two websites:
What Can I Do With This Major?
http://whatcanidowiththismajor.com/major/majors/
My Next Move
http://www.mynextmove.org/
They were also asked to respond to the following questions, which can be
explored further in class through paired discussion and sharing with the rest
of class:
for each career?
s and technology capabilities do you need to develop to be
successful in the career?
you take as early as next spring to begin to develop these skills?
*Ask mentor to bring up website for URI Center for Career and Experiential
Education. As a class, led by mentor, explore the student section of the CCEE
website and discuss ways students can work with CCEE to make the most of their
experiences at URI.
