BoatU.S. Recognized for 50 Years of Serving Recreational Boaters
Valued Partnership and Success Celebrated
San Diego, CA (March 10, 2016) – During the 2016 International Boating and Water
Safety Summit Mark of Achievement Ceremony, the National Safe Boating Council
(NSBC) presented Patron Member BoatU.S. with an award to recognize their
achievements and influence in recreational boating for the past five decades.
Beginning in 1966, Dick Ellison joined Richard Schwartz as he set out to become a voice
for boat owners. The Boat Owners Association of the United States was created to ensure
service, savings, and representation
for the nation’s boat owners. To see
a full history of BoatU.S., visit
www.boatus.com/history.
BoatU.S. has achieved many
accomplishments throughout their
robust history, including their
contribution to the Federal Boating
Safety Act, signed by President
Nixon. This gave the U.S. Coast
Guard authority to regulate boat
manufacturers, enacting a defect law
for newly manufactured boats, and
creating the U.S. Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety. Another key achievement for the
betterment of recreational boating was BoatU.S.’s life jacket study through its
Foundation, completed in 1992, which eventually led to the approval of inflatable life
jackets.
“The NSBC is proud to be associated with BoatU.S. and commend BoatU.S. for reaching
this landmark,” remarked Richard Moore, NSBC Chair. “We wish for BoatU.S. to have
many more years of success and we look forward to our continued collaboration in our
shared mission of safer boating.”
To celebrate, BoatU.S. is giving back to its members with events around the country
including Florida, Washington, New York, Ohio, California, and New Jersey. To see an

About BoatU.S.
Celebrating 50 years in 2016, BoatU.S. is the nation’s largest organization of recreational
boaters with over a half million members. We are the boat owners’ voice on Capitol Hill
and fight for their rights. We help ensure a roadside breakdown doesn’t end a boating or
fishing trip before it begins, and on the water, we bring boaters safely back to the launch
ramp or dock when their boat won’t, day or night. The BoatU.S. Insurance Program gives
boat owners the specialized coverage and superior service they need, and we help keep
boaters safe and our waters clean with assistance from the non-profit BoatU.S.
Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water. Visit BoatUS.com.
