Issue 528 30 May 2017 Congratulations to our award winning team! It gives us great pleasure to announce that our Trust has won the Improving Value Through Innovative Financial Management or Procurement award at last week’s Health Service Journal awards 2017. We developed a programme of work with a focus on achieving savings in a clinically led, joined up, inclusive way that is being embedded into the DNA of the organisation to balance and complement patient experience and quality delivery. This is allowing us to move towards sustainability in an aligned, driven and transparent way. The programme has demonstrated a step change in cost improvement. For 2016/2017 savings are forecast to be greater than £13.5m, compared to £8-10m previously. The judges were impressed with the outstanding turnaround in a phenomenal time period, through a fundamental change in culture and leadership. Aaron Cummins, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Finance, said: “This is a great achievement and a reflection of the efforts all of our teams have made in the design and delivery of our Sustainability Programme. A real focus on re-setting our relationship with money and a commitment to improve quality, safety and experience for our patients has resulted in some great work and it’s great that this has been recognised.” You can find out more about our sustainability programme here https://solutions.hsj.co.uk/story.aspx… We were also finalists for the Improving the Value of Diagnostic Services award. A big congratulations to both teams! Healthcare Careers Weekends More inside The first of our annual healthcare careers weekends took place on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 April at Furness General Hospital. We had a fantastic response from staff teams, despite service pressures, which enabled us to create an action packed timetable full of engaging and interactive sessions for the participants! All of the sessions were absolutely brilliant and we had such great feedback from all of the participants that attended over the weekend! Like the rest of the country, our thoughts are with the families who lost loved ones and those that were injured during the attack. Distressing and senseless events like this can affect everyone, and the emotional effects will be felt by survivors, bereaved families, friends, emergency services, health care workers and the general public. As this attack was so close to home, we know that some of our staff members may be directly affected by the events or know someone who was. If you are affected by what happened, we would like to reassure you that you are not on your own. There is lots of support available to you. If you do feel you need support, we would encourage you to: Speak to your line manager, the workforce team or a chaplain Self-refer yourself to Occupational Health for support. You can view the full list of services and information on how to self-refer can be found on the intranet at: http://uhmb/cd/ohwe/Pages/What-Occ-Health-do-.aspx Visit the online support information available at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/manchester-attack-may-2017support-for people-affected If there is anything else we can do to support staff through this difficult time, please let the workforce team know. Gertie Nic Philib Deputy Director of Workforce Tag rugby - get involved Along with a professional O2 sports rugby coach UHMBT recently held a trial game of tag rugby at the Lancaster campus of the University of Cumbria. The session was well attended and included staff from a wide range of disciplines including a female GP from Ulverston. From developing core stability to improving cardiovascular ability, the health benefits of tag rugby are numerous and varied, and at the most basic level, rugby is a great method of increasing the time spent doing physical activity. Current guidelines suggest that adults should take part in a total of at least 30 minutes of moderately intense physical activity at least five days each week. It is tag rugby not full contact rugby, open to all NHS staff male or female. The free sessions take place every Monday 6-7.30pm. There are changing and shower facilities at the university. You can just turn up on the day or for more information please contact [email protected] or [email protected] WGH - RLI shuttle bus is permanent This is a message to remind all staff that the shuttle bus that runs between the RLI and WGH has been made permanent. At the moment it is on a first come first served basis but the team are looking into a booking system. You can view the running timetable on the intranet homepage or by clicking here. Issue 528 30 May 2017 Are you cyber aware? An increasing number of us are sharing more about our personal lives online, so it is of course a good idea to review who can access what you post and whether your defences are appropriately set. Plus, online communities like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn have introduced new services to keep us engaged, but how many of us have taken the time to review security settings on these accounts? Here is how you can engage more safely: What to do: Disconnect from contacts you don’t communicate with anymore. Only share information with people you trust and whose identity you can verify. Review the third-party apps connected to your social media account, deleting as appropriate. Ensure that your posts do not reveal private information such as location, phone numbers, or date of birth. Check that your account settings have not been changed after an app update. Staff training update for the new Friends and Family Software System We are happy to announce that we have moved to a new system for collecting Friends and Family feedback. The Trust has moved from using “I Want Great Care” to “Healthcare Communications”. The move in software provider is not only more cost effective for the Trust, but the system is also very sophisticated. It will allow us to capture feedback using a variety of different methods and we will be able to manage response rate targets more effectively, as well as enjoy the benefits of having superior qualitative feedback. Training Sessions are still available on TMS to introduce the new Patient Experience Software System, which is capturing your Friends and Family Feedback. In order to introduce the system to you, three introductory training sessions have been scheduled to take place on the following dates: Monday 19 June, 10.30am – 12pm in the Lecture Theatre, Education centre, FGH Monday 19 June, 2pm – 3.30pm in the Lecture Theatre, Education centre, RLI Thursday 22 June, 1.30pm – 3pm in Trust HQ Board Room, WGH The sessions will be delivered by a Healthcare Communications’ representative. Please book your place on TMS; the training is under Patient Relations – Patient Experience. If you have any immediate queries, please email Patient Experience and FFT Inbox [email protected] and please let us know if you haven’t yet received your login details for the new system. Well done to our catering teams Congratulations to Sandra Shaw, Catering Supervisor and Chris Jeffrey, Head Chef – FGH site, who have recently passed the IOSH course. Well done to you both! Also congratulations to catering staff on both the FGH and WGH sites who have just completed their Level 2 in Food Safety. Well done to everyone! Issue 528 30 May 2017 Security advice to all staff As you will be aware, a terrorist attack took place in Manchester on Monday 22 May. As a result of this, the national security threat has been raised to ‘Critical’ and additional security measures have been implemented across the UK in response. Within the NHS, we have been asked to make sure that should another major incident be declared, all hospitals are prepared to respond and support the delivery of care to the injured. At our Trust, we have well developed emergency plans and arrangements, and we would like to take this opportunity to remind staff of these. Contacting staff if a major incident is declared In the event of a major incident being declared, staff will either be contacted by switchboard or their ward, unit or department if they are required. To help make sure we can get in contact with you if we need you in such an event, please can we ask that you ensure your contacts details are up to date? You can do this by accessing ESR Self Service page on the intranet here: http://uhmb/cd/hr/Pages/SS-Homepage.aspx. You can change all your own personal details on there apart from a name change which will need to be done via your line manager. Major incident assembly points The major incident assembly points across our three main hospitals are: RLI: Lecture Theatre (enter directly via the Education Centre) FGH: Paediatric Seminar Room (enter through the main entrance) WGH: Surgical Centre (enter through the main entrance) Staff will need to bring in ID as buildings would be in lockdown and you would be refused entry if you cannot be identified with a current UHMBT ID badge. In all cases, do not use the Emergency Department as a point of access. If staff attend one of the assembly locations but are not needed at that time, you may be asked to return at a specific time. This is to enable us to continue to offer our services throughout and help us maintain safe staffing levels. Local lockdown arrangements Please take this opportunity to refresh your knowledge of the local lockdown arrangements for your ward, unit or department. These would be used in the case of a major incident being declared so that we can control access to our premises or in the event of a specific security incident requiring us to lockdown to ensure the safety of our patients and staff. Your local lockdown arrangement can be found on the Trust policy library here: http://uhmb/ cs/tpdl/Pages/default.aspx Advice from the police This week’s events and the rise in the threat level may make some people feel anxious but the advice from the police is to be “aware not alarmed”. You can help support the security efforts across the sites by: Always wearing the correct Trust ID Challenge anyone who you are not sure of Report security concerns promptly Never leaving doors, windows, etc. unsecure - especially in vulnerable areas If you need any further support with anything detailed in this communication, please contact either myself or Dan Willis, Local Security Management Specialist. Thank you for your continued cooperation at this difficult time. Physio led interactive back pain management seminar On Wednesday 7 June, between 9.30am - 11am, there will be a physio led interactive back pain management seminar at the RLI. Back pain affects approximately two thirds of the adult population at some point in their life. Woking within a hospital leads you to put both physical and mental stresses on your body which increase your chance of back pain. This seminar will detail the anatomy of the back, the common causes of back pain and how you can help decrease or prevent back pain from occurring. The seminar is for anyone who has had, currently is, or feels they may at some point suffer from back pain. The seminar will help you to have a greater awareness of the importance of good back care and improve your own self-management of your back. Please book a place via TMS, call Occupational Health on 42290 or email [email protected].
