The Council House
The Funeral and Protection of Property Officer will work as part of a team responsible for
administering the Council's duty to arrange or public health funerals (under, Section 46 of
the Public Health Control of Diseases Act 1984) if there is no one willing or able to do so.
The post holder will also support work relating to protecting property ( under Section 48 of
the National Assistance Act 1984 and Section 47 of the Care Act 2014), in circumstances
where the owner is unable maintain the dwelling and there is no one willing or able to
assist.
The Funeral and Protection of Property Officer must demonstrate a compassionate and
caring approach with a sympathetic attitude and demeanor, as job involves dealing with the
relatives and friends of the deceased.
The job involves regular liaison with all NHS Trust bereavement offices in the greater
Birmingham area as well as the Birmingham Coroner’s office. The officer will also be
required to trace next of kin and work with a genealogist contractor if family is difficult to
trace.
The Funeral and Protection of Property Officer will provide a professional, and sensitive
service at all times.

Job Purpose
To assist the Service Manager of the Funerals and Protection of Property Section in
administering the Council's duties under Section 48 of the National Assistance Act 1984,
Section 46 of the Public Health Control of Diseases Act 1984 and the relevant child care
legislation.
Awareness and understanding of Section 48 of the National Assistance Act 1984 and
Section 46 of the Public Health Control of Diseases Act 1984. Recent statutory change to be
aware of is a change to the Cremation Regulations 2008 - your right to inspect the medical
certificate
2.
Duties & Responsibilities
2.1 The ability to undertake an accompanied property search of a deceased person’s home
2.2 Arrange all aspects of a public health funeral and to deal with bereavement and the
relatives and friends of the deceased in a professional, sensitive and compassionate manner
2.3 To undertake all aspects of protection of property work, insurance visits and related
property searches and storage of valuable items.
2.4 To maintain and update databases and IT systems used for the managing the funeral
and protection of property service. On a weekly basis to ensure that all Funerals & Protection
of Property monies and cheques (income) are coded via Voyager and to ensure that all
petty cash transactions are coded via Voyager
2.5 To coordinate the maintenance of eRecords and to contribute positively to the electronic
recording agenda.
2.6 I will take a positive attitude to development initiatives as proposed in the BEST, Team
Plan initiatives, Team Meetings and as when required. Respond positively to local and
corporate transformation initiatives.
2.7 To undertake audit inspection visits relating to funerals and the analysis of results
2.8 To undertake the distribution of customer satisfaction forms and the analysis of results
2.9 To coordinate/support the preparation of key performance indicator reports
