Running Identity Finder in Windows
Updated 12/3/2010
*Remember to run Identity Finder in a safe location; your personal information will be displayed to you in
plain text on the screen. If you are scanning your network share, we recommend using a wired
connection and VPN.
Before running Identity Finder, open your web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox) and clear the
browser cache. This will keep Identity Finder from displaying cached information from your web
browsing.
CAUTION: Identity Finder has a “Shred” option. It is located close to the “Search” option. Shred is a
destructive and irreversible deleting of information. Choose menu items carefully.
1. Open Identity Finder. Click Start Search Now.

Some Identity Finder scans can take a long time. At any time during the scan, you can Pause or Stop the
scan. If you select Pause, the Resume option will appear, allowing you to pick up the scan where it left
off.
3. When you have finished a scan, Identity Finder will give you multiple options on how to handle
the data. Select Advanced.

Identity Finder will show you the values it found, as well as the location and the full contents of the
document in which they were found.
4. Select one or more of the results by clicking the check boxes on the left. The following are
explanations of the available options:
Shred - Shred implements the U.S. Department of Defense deletion standard, which is known as
DOD 5220.22-M, for deleting files.
Please note: Shredded files are not recoverable. Use caution when shredding files.
Secure – Secure the highlighted item using the associated application’s features.

Quarantine - Move the highlighted files to a quarantine location and permanently shred it from
its original location.
Ignore - Ignore either the currently highlighted item or its Identity Match so that Identity Finder
des not find it again.
Note: Identity Finder will never search an item on the Ignore List. To remove an item from the
Ignore list, use the “Manage Ignore List’ option.
Recycle - Delete the highlighted file by moving it to the Recycle Bin.
Note: This does not actually delete your file and has a high probability of being recovered even
after you empty the Recycle Bin. It is recommended you use the “Shred” button instead.
Scrub – Remove the highlighted information from the location while keeping all other data
intact.
