COMPOSITE DOORS
What Do They All Mean?
Standard
A traditional style door handle, matching in appearance inside and out.
Lever / Pad
A traditional style handle on the inside and a different design on the outside - another design
option for your home.
This option is supplied with a split spindle operation. Please see our Split Spindle section for
further information.
Split Spindle Lever/Lever
A split spindle simply means that when you go outside and close the door you will need a key to
get back in.
The outside handle does not operate the latch bolt in the door, only the key can operate the latch
from the outside. The inside handle does operate the latch bolt, so if the door is unlocked you
can open the door from the inside without a key.
Advantages
• If you go out and forget to lock your door, the latch is holding the door shut. This means
someone who does not have a key cannot gain access.
• If you enter your property and forget to the lock the door behind you, uninvited visitors (or
worse) can’t just open the door and follow you in.
Disadvantages
• If you go outside, the door closes and you have forgotten your key - you’re locked out of your
home.
Don’t forget: even with a split spindle handle, it is very important to lock your door. Although the
door locks behind you, the latch holding the door shut can be opened by experienced thieves locking your door will help prevent this.

COMPOSITE DOOR TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION
Thumbturn Cylinder
A thumbturn cylinder provides a simple method of opening and closing the door from the inside
without a key. This type of lock has grown in popularity and is now used on a lot of new builds
and flats to allow for a quick and safe exit in the event of a fire. Your handle will look the same, but there is no key slot on the inside as it isn’t needed.
Please note: this option is not available if you upgrade to our Secured by Design specification.
Additional Information
Some style of doors allow you to choose from more handle options than others. If you’re
designing your door and the hardware option you’re looking for is not listed, this means it is not
available for your door style.
Some composite doors also give you the option of additional ‘Hardware Types’, these provide
different aesthetic styles for you to choose from.
