Ms. Cady’s 6th Grade Math Student Syllabus 2016-2017 Room #207 Welcome to 6th Grade Math! I’m thrilled to be your math teacher and I look forward to working with each of you. I know we are going to have an exciting, interesting, and fulfilling year together. This is OUR classroom. We are a team. We must work together in order to achieve our goals. My goals are to teach you the Florida Standards Curriculum, provide a safe, nurturing, and interesting environment, and get you to LOVE MATH. Your goals should be to succeed in math, get along with your peers, and come to class with a positive attitude. I have high expectations for all of you. I KNOW we are going to have a fantastic year together! I have attached my grading system, agreements, and consequences for you. I believe that clear guidelines will prevent future problems and miscommunications throughout the school year. You may ask yourself, “Why do we need all these agreements and procedures?” Agreements provide a safe and effective learning environment. Consequences will be given if a student chooses to violate the agreements. Procedures are necessary for an efficient, well ran, organized classroom. If we waste time with constant interruptions, we’re not going to be able to accomplish our goals. If for some reason a procedure isn’t working, we’ll change it. I’m flexible! I have an open door policy for all of you. If you’re having difficulty with a concept, I’m willing to give you extra help. We’ll try different approaches to help you master the material. All you have to do is ask. Your parents can contact me with questions or concerns via email at [email protected]. Please feel free to contact me at any time. Procedures & Guidelines 1. Students will conduct themselves with dignity, peace and pride. #BE AMAZING 2. The bell does not dismiss the class—the teacher will dismiss the class. #RESPECT 3. Students will be allowed only 3 tardies in a semester. If a student receives 4 tardies, consequences will occur through the class economic system. 4. Tutorials will be assigned if your average drops below a 75%. Tutorials are TBD. If you are assigned tutorials, you must attend until the progress shows in your work. 5. Attendance is important. If you have perfect attendance for the entire nine weeks period, you will receive a bonus and an additional point on your average. School absences will not count against you. If a student is absent, it will be your responsibility to receive a slip from the front desk as well as make up any work. #SHOW UP 6. Every student will receive a progress report mid-semester. Parents will need to sign this to be returned for an easy grade. 7. Students will be required to keep a binder of all classwork, Extended Learning Opportunities, and notes including a definitions ring. This binder must be brought with you to the class daily!. I will do a “binder check” at the end of every chapter and you will be graded on this binder according to a rubric. #ORGANIZE YOURSELF 8. Our classroom economy is our checks and balances and is required participation from every student. #NO OPTING OUT. 9. I will do everything I can to help all students be successful. Students must also do all they can to be successful. Supply List Student is responsible for bringing to class: 1 2” 3-Ring Binder *pencils *gel pens *red pens *agenda Index cards and notebook paper (as needed) *Students will be fined for not coming to class prepared and can purchase needed supplies with earned classroom income* Grading All students start out with 100% for their grade. Fines will be given for incomplete classwork or “goldbricking”. The grading procedure for each nine weeks period is as follows: Daily Work (including centers)– 50% **To be clear--you will not pass without completing all daily and center work when present** Binder check – 15% Tests, Projects – 25% Quizzes – 10% Make-Up Work: IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO RETRIEVE YOUR NOTES, CLASSWORK AND/OR ELO FROM THE ABSENT BINS. IF NOTES AND/OR CLASS PROBLEMS ARE NOT COMPLETED, THEY WILL BE COUNTED AS MISSING. (see Agreement #5) Example: If you’re absent, you have until the binder check day to make up the work. If you do not make-up the class problems and work before the binder checks, you will be given a grade commensurate with that lack of personal pride. Agreements 1.
