Reading
Read the story and then answer the sentences about Susan Meyer.
Susan Meyer – The woman who loves horses more than anything else
Her childhood
Susan was born in a small village near Zurich. Her parents didn’t have much money, but the parents
of one of her schoolmates were rich and had two horses. This schoolmate, Phyllis, often took Susan
with her and both of them rode over the fields and through the forests around their village. Susan
had the chance to learn all about horses and her love for them grew bigger and bigger. But when
she was sixteen Susan couldn’t see Phyllis anymore, because both of them had to work in different
places. But she knew for sure that she wanted to have her own horse one day.
In her twenties
Susan worked very hard for her dream, but she didn’t earn much as a tourist operator. Soon she
realized that something in her life had to be changed. Although she liked her job, she could visit
many exiting places all over the world, she couldn’t forget the horses. And one day, when she visited
Argentina in order to find new destinies and hotels for potential clients, she met an Argentinean,
Felipe, in Buenos Aires who had a hacienda with five horses near Salta in the north of Argentina.
Her life in Salta
They arranged to meet again when Susan was in Salta to visit another hotel. Felipe showed her his
hacienda. They rode on two of his horses around his land, which he was very proud of. When they
crossed the river on the back of his horses, Susan wished she could stay here forever. She was afraid
of leaving Switzerland, of course. But Carlos had a friend who owned a little travel agency where she
could work during the summer. At the end of this summer she decided to buy a piece of land and
two horses. She could only afford it, because everything was so much cheaper in Argentina than in
Switzerland. Today she still works in the very same tourist office and sometimes she offers horse
rides for tourists on her own land. And Felipe is – not her husband, but still a good friend.

Reading
Garry Walker – With a thumb up
Garry Walker is going to visit Glasgow to celebrate his friend’s 20th birthday – travelling like he
travelled last time: hitch-hiking.
Garry, a 22-year-old student from Aberdeen, Scotland, has always liked travelling. He studies English
literature at the University of Aberdeen. Although he works as a waiter in a local pub on Saturdays,
he is short of money most of the time. The lack of money was the reason why he started hitchhiking three years ago when he went to Torquay in the South of England. Now he just likes
travelling this way.
Garry says: ‘Hitch-hiking is often much more fun than travelling by train or bus. Once I was with
three other guys on the deck of a lorry. The wind was blowing around our heads while we were
watching the beautiful landscape of Dartmoor. I have never felt as free as that time.’
Garry is very much aware of the fact that hitch-hiking can be dangerous and he admits that one has
to be careful. ‘Once I accepted a ride from Brighton to Portsmouth,’ he remembers, ‘when the welldressed gentleman drove his Aston Martin much too fast. I was really scared.’ But the excitement of
hitch-hiking is stronger than the fear.
Another point is waiting for a free lift. Garry thinks: ‘You have to have patience, of course. But on
the other hand this is part of the joy. Last time, when I went to Glasgow, I had to wait for more than
forty minutes. But then an editor from Belfast, who was on business in Aberdeen, took me directly to
Glasgow. The journey lasted four hours and the stranger even invited me for lunch in a restaurant in
the highlands. Incredible, isn’t it?’
Englisch A1/A2, Selbsteinstufungstest – EB Zürich © 2012
Because every journey is different, Garry doesn’t know how his coming trip to Glasgow will be. But
for sure he will have another fantastic story to tell his friend.

62. Was the lack of money the reason why he started hitch-hiking?
