The post holder will have overall responsibility for delivering ZSL’s work in Indonesia in this area of work and will be responsible for managing a team of experienced and dedicated in-country staff. They will be an experienced project manager and have direct responsibility for managing the delivery of several of ZSL’s corporate partnerships. The post holder will be critical to upscaling and solidifying ZSL’s work and delivering the David and Lucille Packard Foundation funded integrated landscape project. The post holder will report directly to the Indonesia Country Manager and work closely with the relevant members of the Regional Programme Management Team to meet reporting and fundraising requirements. They will support the components of this work that directly collaborate with ZSL Global Palm Oil Team, and Business and Biodiversity Programme Manager. The post holder will line oversee and support the Production Landscape Managers and their teams, which are based in Bogor and South Sumatra, comprising of at least 12 members of staff. The post holder will be based in Indonesia, with frequent travel within the region. Main Duties and Responsibilities Project management Working with the Country Manager, the post holder will lead the setting of and adherence to project objectives and annual work plan as agreed with the Programme Manager and field team at start of various different projects. This includes the management of project and funding pipelines. Liaise with Project Manager and project personnel to ensure that agreed work is completed on schedule, to budget and in compliance with ZSL health and safety procedures and UK/in-country laws and regulations. Oversee the management of relevant project staff including time management and undertaking professional development reviews, Take overall responsibility for the management of project budgets and accounts and keeping of financial records, with submission of a financial report every month to the relevant in-country finance manager. Sub contract and non-ZSL technical partner management; including analysis of cost and performance of partner agreements, tracking of performance and financial reporting to ensure sub contracts are on schedule and delivered to a high quality. Take overall responsibility for the production of monthly technical reports and key performance indicators (KPIs), and technical and financial reports to project donors as required, on schedule, ensuring these follow the agreed review process. Oversee the recruitment of suitable field team(s) in collaboration with relevant partners, where necessary. Oversee the purchase (according to procurement plans as required), management and recording of survey equipment, supplies and vehicles (including keeping of equipment log), in line with ZSL and Donor procurement policies. Stakeholder relationships To oversee the building and maintenance of successful relationships with a variety of government, academic, private and NGO partners, which may include the development of working relationships, including negotiation of Memoranda of Understanding or contracts to formalise and clarify details of partnership, particularly for the corporate sector. Support the relevant Project Managers in liaising with relevant government officials to ensure the project meets governance needs and that formal and informal government support is assured at all stages in project development and implementation. Liaison with other academic, conservation and development organisations working in-country as well as other countries in the region, to assess current data availability and gaps and ensure that the work of the project complements and builds on existing initiatives. Ensure regular communications are maintained with in-country partners regarding progress and any relevant issues surrounding the project. Research and fieldwork Ensure with the relevant Project Managers that the planning of fieldwork, follows a scientifically-sound experimental design (including methods, timeline, budget and suitable study sites) agreed with the Country Manager and relevant Technical Support. Execution of field surveys, through either direct participation or oversight and regular checks of trained field team, ensuring all surveys are completed to budget and on time and data are entered and stored in electronic database. Ensure that team members are n collecting and analysing data according to agreed protocol and where possible during this process seek opportunities to build the capacity of ZSL’s in-country staff data analysis skills. Capacity building Supervise, train and assist national staff in their projects; promote teamwork and provide feedback to staff; ensure proper collection, analysis and publication of data. Promotion of environmental awareness and best practice amongst government, industry and the general public where appropriate. Representation and promotion of ZSL Take overall responsibility for the preparation and distribution of any deliverables required by government and donors, in collaboration with project partners. Oversee the dissemination of the project findings in international fora including scientific papers. To facilitate lesson-learning and information exchange such as social media, blogs (internal and external) as well as updating the ZSL Website Representation of ZSL at, and participation in, relevant national, regional and international conservation policy/planning events (as funds allow). Participation in the development of ZSL’s conservation strategy and policies, particularly with reference to Production Landscapes and related programmes. Project development Lead the development with relevant in-country and Regional Staff to develop funding proposals, tenders and work bids for the project as required/advantageous. Development of new aspects of the project that are in line with ZSL’s long-term strategic aims, and assistance in gaining national/regional/international recognition and funding for such proposed work. General Ensuring all activities and procedures follow ZSL policies, particularly with regard to health and safety, finance, human resources and communications, and dissemination of ZSL policies to project staff as necessary. Person Specification Qualifications & Experience Master’s Degree in a relevant subject such as Biodiversity, Conservation, Forestry, Natural Resource management or Bachelor degree (with equivalent experience) or equivalent level of work experience in a related position. Extensive experience in either field conservation and or development. Proven experience of project management, with demonstrable experience in a project leadership role, this must include significant experience in project management and financial reporting. Excellent written and spoken English. Very strong organisational, interpersonal and presentation skills. Proven fundraising and report-writing ability. Good communication skills and experience with the media and public speaking. Proven ability to work effectively with teams and senior managers. Experience working with the private sector and or with small scale enterprises is a bonus. Experience of designing and implementing a field research project in a production landscape, ideally in the tropics, is desirable. Knowledge A good understanding of landscape management and conservation issues, in particular those related to public private partnership. A good working knowledge of certification schemes, ideally in the context of oil palm or another agricultural commodity. A comprehensive understanding of the HCV approach and its application in one or more sectors. Skills & Abilities Understanding of social and environmental high conservation values. Experience of working within the context of governance focused projects, ideally involving a multiple number of stakeholders. Desirable to have experience in undertaking environmental impact assessments, ESIA and/or HCV assessments. Ideally a Chartered Environmentalist and or membership of professional bodies such as IEEM BPR. Other Requirements This post will require some work in evening and weekends as well as undertaking field visits. Desirable experience of working in Indonesia, or at a minimum experience of working and living overseas. Ability to converse in Indonesian desirable.
