South Elgin High School 760 East Main Street South Elgin, IL 60177-1702 847.289.3760 http://schools.u-46.org/sehs “BUILD, ACHIEVE, GRADUATE Anthony La Rue Coach, Track and Field SEHS student-athlete, THANK YOU for choosing to be a part of South Elgin High School Boys Track and Field team. You have made the personal choice to dedicate time, mental energy, and large amounts of effort to a long 2014 South Elgin High School track and field season. If you as an athlete, with parent support, bring confidence, commitment, concentration and dedication to each day of this season we can finish with a ton of excitement and success. I expect us to continue to make great strides we have these past four years! At the completion of the 2014 season of the South Elgin High boy’s track and field team I will have completed my twelfth year of coaching distance events, eighth at the high school level. My personal experience in track and field starts in college when I began running on my own as a stress reliever and a way to keep my competitive streak alive. After college graduation, in 2001, I ran my first half marathon (13.1miles), with countless half’s following that first long distance run. At the start of the 2014 season I will have completed FOUR marathons, three in Chicago, IL. My PR for the marathon is 3:39. ALL athletes will be expected to move in a common direction, together. All athletes are expected to be contribute to the team in a positive fashion To ensure that you perform at the highest level possible at the last meet during EACH year, including YOUR senior year, WE will always work to: 1. make the program beneficial and positive for the team and any individuals involved so they can be successful in school, family, track and field and their future, 2. prepare and develop students for life-long fitness and teach them how to prevent common injuries which limit growth in athletics, 3. recognize positive results, achieved goals and the steps we took along the journey to reach them, 4. guide students into making wise choices to benefit their high school careers and will allow many successes in their life, 5. build individuals with strong character, who always make the best decisions possible. As members of the track and field coaching staff, we wholeheartedly enjoy working with and teaching aspiring sprinters, runners, jumpers and throwers to be successful and compete at their best, day in and day out. Each coach has high expectations for their duties as mentors and teachers just as we will for your son(s) performances. We will always teach and model to inspire our athletes to do their best and always make the right decisions. We will always encourage and hope for open communication with our athletes, parents and community members, including the booster foundation. Also, as we build this team, community involvement will create other interactions that will assist our team over the long haul. As a member of the SEHS track and field team it is important to know the rules of how a team works. Each of these rules is taken from our own experiences and the U-46 Athletic Code of Conduct provided in the student planner. Participation in competitive interscholastic athletics is a privilege available to every student in U46. The acceptance of participation in activities involves a commitment by the participant to adhere to the “Extracurricular Code of Conduct.” Finally, it is the responsibility of the coaches to inform team members of the Athletic Code and to enforce it in a fair and consistent manner. Sincerely, Anthony La Rue head coach, SEHS Boys track and field ======== ======= Academic Success for ALL SEHS track and Field TEAM RULES1. Team members are expected to meet IN F201/G139 during INDOORS and on the track during OUTDOORS at 3:10 p.m. SHARP! Stretches will begin at 3:15 SHARP!! Anyone not able to get dressed and get out to practice on time does not keep our team as a priority. The first and second time you will be warned. The third time you will sit out for one meet. The fourth time you will be considered unexcused absent. The fifth time you will sit out of a conference meet. 2. ATTENDANCE will be taken by coach La Rue or an assistant coach each day at the beginning of practice. At the completion of practice and MEETS you must check out with me (or an assistant coach) by shaking our hand before you leave. If an athlete is not in practice an e-mail will be sent home giving all parents notification of your attendance record and status with the team. 3. We take great pride in a personal focus at our practices. Anyone is welcome to join us at anytime. When a new person enters our practice area, you are expected to greet them with a handshake and introduce yourself by stating your first and last name. 4. If you report to practice late, submit a written note/e-mail from the teacher. Academics come first, however you are expected to meet with the teacher during your lunch/study hall time or before school as much as possible. You should notify coach LaRue that you will be meeting with a teacher before your meeting. 5. If a player misses a total of 3 practices that are defined as UNEXCUSED throughout the season, they are not making the team a priority and will be asked to leave the team. The only legitimate excuse from practice is absence from school. An unexcused absence is defined as being in school but not at practice or not attending a MANDATORY Saturday practice or event (f.y.i. there will be Saturday practices) without prior notice given to the coach. Athletes missing a Saturday practice or event due to a sudden sickness will not run in the next meet even if the parent excuses the athlete. The first unexcused absence results in a warning. The second unexcused absence results in sitting out a scheduled meet. The third unexcused absence results in dismissal from the squad. There is no excuse for not letting me or another coach know your whereabouts if you miss practice and are in school. If you cannot find me in B216, then you are not making the team a priority in your life. Telling a teammate to tell a coach that you will be absent is not acceptable. 6. After school detentions, p.m. schools, Saturday schools, etc. count as unexcused absences. In other words, if you get three after-school detentions during the season you are off the team. 7. You are allowed three excused absences during the season due to family emergencies, illnesses, dental appointments and other unavoidable circumstances. These appointments will only be excused if coach LaRue knows of them in advance. Missing practice for a dental appointment or other prearranged appointment without letting me know in advance is deemed an unexcused absence. If more than two of these appointments are expected during the season, your parents need to contact me. All excused practices MUST BE MADE UP in a timely fashion. If athletes miss more than one practice (unexcused or excused) in a two week period they will sit out a meet. FOR EXAMPLE- If an athlete knows in advance that they must miss a meet, the head coach must be notified in writing one week prior to the competition, as this is when roster line ups are due to the hosting school. This absence will be deducted from the excused absences mentioned above. No other early dismissals from practice will be granted without facing the above mentioned consequences. 8. You must be academically eligible for any sport. Eligibility is checked every week, and is based on your record in class from the beginning of the semester. You must be passing five classes to be eligible. 9. All athletes are required to read and sign the school eligibility requirements and are aware of the Extracurricular code of conduct. It is important for athletes to know these expectations. Any athlete that breaks our athletic code will receive the appropriate consequences. Please note that attendance at a party with alcohol or other drugs is a violation even if you do not consume illegal substances yourself! 10. Competition Monday/Tuesday Meets There are typically two (2) levels of competition run during these meets; frosh/soph or Varsity (V). There is no limit to the number of athletes per level in these meets. These meets are usually run against 1-3 other schools. Invitationals Invitationals are typically held on Fridays or Saturdays. Invites are sometimes Varsity only, and only allow a limited number of entries per school. Some invitationals are relay meets in which case athletes will not be competing on an individual level. These meets are usually run against 8 or more other schools. Championship Series The Championship Series consists of UE Conference, Sectionals and the State Championship meets. All High Schools who have teams are eligible to enter competitors at the Sectional meet. In order to advance to the State Meet, an athlete must either achieve state qualifying time or mark, come in first or second place during the finals of their individual event, or come in first place in their relay. No matter what type of meet we are competing in, athletes may compete in any combination of events, however, they are only be allowed to compete in four (4) events. In addition, at larger meets, athletes may be required to participate in preliminary heats/flights of their event. In order to advance to the next round, an athlete may be required to achieve a certain distance, time or place in their heat/flight. Safety Any athlete that violates a known safety rule will be suspended from the upcoming meet. Examples of some of the rules are as follows: 1) Cross only at crosswalks, 2) NO running on railroad tracks, 3) when no sidewalk is present, run on the grass or gravel, single file, against traffic 4) Do not play by the river, 5) Only proper use of equipment will be accepted. End of the season Team Awards In order to be eligible for an award, an athlete must complete the season in good standing and participate in at least 80% of the eligible meets for the season. The level of the award will be based on the athlete’s grade level, year on the team and level of competition competed in for a majority of the season. ======== ======= Academic Success for ALL THANK YOU for choosing to be a part of South Elgin High School Boys Track and Field team.
