ABSTRACT This study investigated the prevalence of porcine respiratory disease comple x
( PRDC) and its infectious agents in Taiwan. Two hundred and tw enty-tw o cases collect ed from 57
commercia l pig herds wer e analyzed. Histopathological- examination, isolation and polymerase chain
reaction indicated that 61.3 % ( 136/222) of collected cases had PRDC. Among the 136 PRDC cases,
123 were posit ive for porcine circovirus type 2 ( PCV2 ) , 115 were positive for Pasteurella multocida
( PM) , 113 were positive for Myc oplasma hyopneumoniae ( M H ), 61 were posit ive for Salmonella
enterica serotype Choleraesuis ( SC) , 28 we re positive fo r porcine reproduct ive and respiratory syndrome virus ( PRRSV) , 28 were positive for Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae ( AP) , 13 w ere positive
for Streptococcus suis ( SS), and 2 were posit ive for swine influenza virus. Among those cases infected w ith PCV2, PM ( 102/136, 75% ) was most prevalent follow ed by MH ( 101/ 136, 74.3% ), SC
( 58/136, 42.6% ), and AP ( 27/ 136, 19.9% ). Based on analytical data, PRDC is an important disease
in weaning, growing and f inishing pigs. Of the infect ious agents present in PRDC, PCV2, the most
common pathogen , is frequently concurrent w ith other pathogens. Thus, PCV2 infecti on may play an
important role in t he pathoge nesis of PRDC [Yang CY, Chang TC, L in CN, Tsai CP, *C hiou MT. Study
