19th May 2017 Newsletter 28 Dear Parents, Keeping children safe, in every aspect of their school life is the priority for every adult associated with school. There have been a lot of changes to safeguarding practices and it’s always high on our agenda each week at staff meetings so that it is kept uppermost in our thinking and remains in our consciousness. At this time of year, Governors monitor safeguarding and, as part of the school’s leadership team, they help to complete a safeguarding audit from Hampshire County. This annual check does rather focus the mind on our day to day systems and practices to ensure that we are all doing the same and that children really DO feel safe, otherwise it becomes assumed and that is not good enough at all! Governor monitoring this week by two Governors, has shown that our safeguarding is a strong feature of our school and well embedded by everyone involved with the children as well as the children themselves. Children who spoke to Governors could all name an adult they would speak to should they be concerned about anything and could, in many circumstances, give an example of when this had been effective. They also felt school was safe – yay! The idea is that children who hold this responsible role in school all work together annually to understand their collective roles and share best practice. James Howard and Katie Robinson write an account of their morning at Test Valley:When we arrived, all the children sat in two rows of chairs, facing each other. After we had chatted to the people opposite us, one row moved along two seats and we chatted to them. We did this until we had spoken to everybody there. We were then put into groups with people from different schools. We shared our ideas that we have had for things like fundraising and lunch time games and talked about how we can improve our school environment. Each school was given a copy of School Councillors Guidance rules. This will go onto our School Councillors notice board in the hall. We then had the opportunity to talk to some Test Valley students to ask them questions about the senior school and they also showed us the pool! It was a really enjoyable morning. Pre-School news To save pre-school parents a bit of time trawling through the whole newsletter, each week will have a dedicated ‘pre-school’ section in. Please do read the rest of the newsletter though as it’s what your child will hopefully be moving into and there will be bits that are relevant for you. Staffing Learning & playing Thank you for bearing with us this week as we have had lots of staff illness which has been unfortunate but unavoidable. You’ll be pleased to know that Mrs McInnes begins working with us on Tuesday. She will be spending Monday in school with our Early Years team and going through policies and child protection briefings so that she is prepared for going into pre-school. As there are only 4 days left until the end of term, we will reassign any children to key worker groups after half term if needs be. This week children have been thoroughly engrossed in creative crafts using glitter, pom poms, glue and feathers, making dens; rockets, army bases and castles and watching birds and noticing the nature around school.
