The Board of Ministry Minutes from the May 21st meeting were approved
by the Board at the June 25th Board meeting.
Board of Ministry Minutes
Our Savior Lutheran
May 21, 2017
Present were Joy Bielenberg, Gary Phillips, Pastor Robin Dugall, Paul Gullickson, Dennis Brandt,
Laurie Janssen, and Maggie Crawford, with President Paul Janssen presiding. Dennis opened with
prayer at 12:50 p.m.
Secretary’s report: Paul G. moved and Gary seconded to approve April’s minutes. Motion
carried.
Education report:
• Laurie reported that the teachers and students like the liturgy based curriculum.
• They hope to do a service project about every three months; such as food bank, update the
bulletin board, make snacks for after worship service, etc.
• VBS was discussed. Perhaps Saturday would not work well, due to families leaving for weekend.
Funds to support VBS are available through both Reberger and Fairbrother Funds.
Pastor’s Report:
1 - Bible Study fall 2017 – Starting the week after Labor Day – 10 weeks on the what it means to
know and live a Christian Worldview. I’m also considering doing some teaching on HOW to study
the bible. That may be part of this series.
2 - Summer – I continue to ask the questions of people in our congregation - what activities do we
need to DO and stress and publicize? What has been the usual calendar of activities that we cannot
ignore? What can we add?How can we make this summer MORE and MOST engaging for our faith
communities? So far, we have some events scheduled but I’m looking forward to seeing some
others. Jeff, the OSLC “Ringmaster”, has taken on this role with enthusiasm!
3 - VBS idea – I’m working on an idea to have my friends who have done puppets and children’s
ministry with me in the past come to McCall for an “all day Saturday” mini-VBS day (puppets,
songs, games, etc.). We publicize this to the community. I think we could “charge” $5 for the day
which would offset some costs (primarily paying for the airfare of my friends). More on this
possibility by the end of the month.
4 – Prayer Ministry and Caring Ministry Re-boot – see attached sheets
5 – Summer sermon series – FAQ @ OSLC/SOTM – I’m getting some GREAT questions! It is going
to be a good summer at both congregations!
6 – Food Bank Advisory – I am talking to two members of OSLC about taking on this ministry. I
have both “prioritized” in that I would like to see one accept the position first...I have discussed this
with him and have given him a week to pray about it and get an “answer” back to me.
7 – First Communion Program/Statement – Policy statement is being considered by the Elders of
OSLC and will be forwarded to the Board once the Elders complete their review.
8 – Communion Statement Review – The Elders are considering that as well. Once the Elders and I
talk about this issue we will pass it on to the Board.
9 - Website – For OSLC, TWO new pages (separate and hyperlinked directly) for the Cancer
Companion and Fathers in the Field ministry have been created. Facebook Ads have been
purchased to drive our target market to our website for Fathers in the Field.
10 - Confirmation plan? I am starting my research in the development of this ministry. There will
be MOST LIKELY two components – one for students – a second for adults. The “Adult”
Confirmation process will essentially be a new member procedure which will include three sessions
(What it means to be a Christian Disciple; More info on OSLC/SOTM; Personal “involvement”
challenges (spiritual gifts, service, tithing, etc.). The student confirmation process is a bit more
complicated because of the fact that we have so few students at this time in our history. I’ll be
designing a process for students in cooperation with a few families in our congregation that do
have kids who are interested in the confirmation process.
11 - Reformation 500 – I’ve informed you in the past - I’m putting together a one month sermon
and study series on the key issues of the Reformation; we will show a couple of Luther movies
(there is a new one that has been produced plus one from a few years ago starring Ralph Finnes);
we will have a joint worship experience (maybe at the Finn Church) the first Sunday in November.
12 – Back to the LISTENING TOUR –I’m back at it in both locations! F.Y.I.
13 – Sermons are now available online to listen to – they are on the McCall site (oslcmccall.com)
and are in a password protected page (password “OSLC”).
Elders’ Report: Gary updated the board on Elders’ May meeting.
• Our Savior is seeing new visitors, a good sign.
• Elders need to pay attention to those in their elder circle and make contact with those not
attending worship to make sure all is well.
• Gary had a gathering of the Phillips’ elder circle at their place on the river on 5/13, with eleven
folks attending the fellowship gathering.
• Bill Williams is currently working on the Volunteer List for the next six months (July through
December) and shared some additions and deletions to the list.
• Gary mentioned a need for one or two additional altar guild members as Chris Phillips and
Maggie are the only ones changing the paraments and could use some help.
• There is a need for folks to sign up for after service treats and church cleaning.
• With Pastor’s scheduled absence on Sunday, July 2, communion will be moved to July 9th.
Treasurer’s Report:
• Joy shared Profit and Loss report.
Friendship Committee:
• A friendship committee will replace our former membership committee. The informal committee
will not need to have a representative present at our monthly board of ministry meetings.
• Robin will work with Jeff Riechmann to find and train four outgoing individuals. Each will sit in a
quadrant of the sanctuary during worship service and be responsible to identify and say hi to
visitors in their quadrant.
Property Management Report:
• Paul G. shared that the new fire pit has been built.
• Paul is putting together a list of items needing to be done and will post it in the midweek news. A
signup sheet will be on the table.
• Logs on the sunny side need to be treated.
• Bill Williams did a survey and no trees need to be cut this year.
New Business and Topics from the Floor:
• Camp Perkins will be raising money to replace a deck.
• Discussion was held about how best to support Camp Perkins and other ministries.
• Consensus of the group was to use Fall Auction proceeds to support Camp Perkins first with
balance to support other ministries…amounts and ministries to be determined.
• John Bielenberg will be stepping down as our Camp Perkins’ representative. Gary volunteered
to take John’s place.
• Woodstock, a community effort to cut and deliver wood to folks in need and sponsored by
Heartland Hunger, will be held on Saturday, July 8th. Participation from Our Savior is
encouraged.
• Robin will attend Heartland Hunger representative meeting on June 14th at 10:00.
• Length of service as an elder is not defined and will be discussed at a later date.
• Joy shared that our Orphan Grain Train project will be some time in August.
• Next Board of Ministries’ meeting will be held on Sunday, June 25th after church.
Gary closed in prayer. Meeting adjourned at 2:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Maggie Crawford, secretary

newsletter. When reports are made to the board at monthly meetings, they are already for the
month just past. In an effort to provide more timely information, we will report attendance and
