Event Schedule
Doors open at 5:45 p.m. for all
olympians and spectators
Moderators and Scorekeepers should
arrive by 5:15; it is crucial that you are
in the room before the students
Event begins promptly at 6:00 p.m.
Students report directly to Round 1
room assignment
Awards ceremony will begin at around
8:30 p.m. if not sooner

6:00 - 6:45 p.m. - Round 1
6:50 - 7:30 p.m. - Round 2
7:35 - 8:15 p.m. - Round 3
8:30 - 9:00 p.m. - Awards Ceremony

Moderator Instructions
Report to registration for to sign-in and receive iPad
You should be in your room before the students arrive to
arrange the desks so teams have room to sit on the floor
Before beginning a round:
Position the teams in a manner that facilitates conferring
among team members without providing an advantage to the
opponents
Introduce yourself to the students and parents; explain
purpose of the event - to have fun reiterate this is not a
competition
Verify teams & scorekeeper
Count the students
Identify team captain
Explain question procedure (Round 1 only)
Flip coin to determine starting team

Question Procedure:
Choose iBook on your iPad (Questions
are labeled by Round)
Do one practice question in Round 1
only
Read question once clearly and slowly; if
requested by team, repeat question
Teams have 20 seconds to answer
(scorekeeper keeps track of time)
If the correct answer is given the
questioning moves to the next team
Moderator Instructions
Question Procedure continued:
If the incorrect answer is given, the other team has
the opportunity to answer
Question is not re-read; other team must answer
immediately
The answer is verified from the question card,
answer does not have to be verbatim
Each team is asked 20 questions; a total of 40
questions asked per round
Moderator’s decision is final
Refer any audience concerns/comments to Reading
Olympics staff
After Round 3, please hand the iPad to RO staff before
leaving your room. Each iPad will be checked-off as
returned.
Moderator Instructions
Teams are not allowed to ask for
different questions (if they have not
read the book, they should pass)
Teams have up to 20 seconds to
answer, they don’t have to wait 20
seconds to answer
Moderators and scorekeepers are
responsible for putting the room back
the way it was
Scorekeeper Instructions
Check in at the registration table
Choose an audience member to also keep score
You will stay in the same room for all 3 rounds
You are responsible for monitoring time, tabulating
scores, recording the final scores for that round on
the scorecard, and signing the scorecard
Responsible for assisting moderator
At the end of Rounds 1 and 2, team chaperones will
take their teams’scorecards if they are switching
rooms
Scorekeeper Instructions
At the end of R0und 3, remain in the room until
scorecard is picked up by Reading Olympics staff
Bringing a watch or timer is recommended
Score Sheet
You will have 4,
double-sided score
sheets. Two sheets for
the scorekeeper and
two sheets for the
volunteer
Mark in the column
when a team correctly
answers a question.
Total the points at the
end of each round and
record on teams’
scorecards

Bye Rounds
Some nights have an uneven number of
teams resulting in rooms only having one
team assigned
If you are a moderator or scorekeeper with
a Bye round, you still ask that single team
20 questions and record the score on their
scorecard
Round 3
When you are done with Round 3, the
scorekeeper totals each team’s
scorecard
Flip your door hanger to the green
“Round Complete” side
A Reading Olympics Committee
member will pick up the scorecards
Scorekeepers should remain in the
room until your scorecard is picked up
Students should proceed to their assigned
awards location (Gym, Cafeteria, or
Auditorium)

Team Chaperone
Responsible for supervising student behavior and
discipline and ensuring that the classrooms and
all items in them are not disturbed
Moving students from room to room based on
announcements
Allow students to visit concession stands between
rounds only if time permits
Obtain the team scorecard after Rounds 1 & 2
Assist with noise and crowd control throughout
the event
Remain with the team during the awards
Student Responsibilities
Be on time and go directly to Round 1
room
Be respectful of all host school property
Remain in the room until the end of the
round is announced
Have fun!
Awards Ceremony
The awards will be held in two locations at each
venue: Phoenixville HS- gym and cafeteria;
WC East HS - cafeteria and auditorium
Award location is printed on scorecard
Team captains will sit in the front (there will be
signs with the team names) to receive ribbons
when their team name is called
Team captains will remain in front until all teams
have been awarded ribbons
Chaperone is responsible for ensuring students
are reunited with their parents
Teams should not begin to leave until all ribbons
have been awarded

Things to Consider
If you finish Round 1 or 2 early, please remain in
room until the end of the round is announced
For bathroom breaks, send a few students at a
time, not your whole team
Allow time for traffic; students will be allowed in
the building at 5:45 p.m.
Encourage students to eat before arriving
Dress comfortably
Parents who arrive after a round begins are
allowed to come in the room
Consider taking a picture of the classroom with
your phone as a reminder of room layout
