FROM FRANCIS WHETSTONE
The local choice
East Sussex County Council elections: May 2013
Having represented the Forest Row division since
1997, I am delighted that the Conservative Party
branches have selected me once more to be their
candidate in next years County Council elections.
I was first
elected when
the Liberal
Democrat
administration
was ending
in a serious
financial mess,
leaving the
succeeding
Conservatives
a huge task in
restoring our
finances. This
it has done at a time when the Central Government
has been giving us less and less money locally.
At the same time, by tightening the Country’s
administration, we have been able to increase our
activity in key areas.

ACTION AROUND THE AREA
In this division the most noticeable signs of the County
Council’s activity has been on our roads, a never-ending
maintenance problem. Despite the serious backlog there
can be no doubt, that in all five parishes, there has been
significant upgrading. This year we have seen resurfacing
of the centre of Hartfield in only two days, and the A22 at
Forest Row both North and South of the village. Whilst we
are still finalising road realignments and traffic calming in
Mark Cross.
The refurbishment of the Library in Forest Row was made
possible by the imaginative decision of the Parish Council
to reorganise their meeting rooms. This has allowed the
Library to expand into another room and the old library
to be turned into a children’s section, thus providing a
significant boost to the opportunities for younger readers.
The Coalition Government’s reorganisation of schools
will greatly reduce the County Council’s role with them
but during the process the Councils will still have a role
to play and it will be up to the County Councillors to see
that, especially where primary Schools are concerned,
the right sort of long lasting structure is in place. It’s
this challenge which makes me keen to continue as your
representative. Improving education for our children must
be the best way of giving them hope for their futures.
