*Activity Directions*
Name Bingo- Create a grid (either 4x4 or 5x5 squares) with facts in each
square (has a brother, has travelled to another country, etc.). Each
participant gets a sheet and has to go talk to new people, finding people who
match the descriptions then writing that person’s name in the square. You
can play to get an actual bingo (4 or 5 in a row) or see who can fill in the
most of their chart.
Bump- All players line up behind the foul line of a basketball court. The first
two players should each begin with a basketball. The first player tries to
shoot a basket, and the second tries to bump their basketball out of the air
with their own. If player 1 makes a basket, they pass the ball on to the third
person who immediately begins play with player 2 and player 1 returns to
the end of the line. If player 2 makes a basket first, player 1 is out for the
game. The game continues on through the line until there are just 2 players
left, who then play against each other for one winner!
Post Cards-
Pats on the Back- Each participant should have a piece of paper (cardstock
is best!) with two holes punched and a ribbon or string tied in order to wear
it as a necklace, but it should be worn backwards so it is on their back. Music
is played while each person rights positive comments on each person’s back
that the students can read after the activity is over.
Hand Ball- Kids should be split up into pairs or teams. One side is standing
against a wall, while the other has a small ball that they are trying to hit the
wall with. You score points by hitting the wall or goal with the ball while the
other team is trying to block it. (This could maybe be explained better by
someone who has played, I haven’t before)
Chain Gang- Have a brief discussion about what students do well and some
of their talents. Ask students to think of 5 (this number can vary based on
group size) things they do well, and then write them on paper strips. Create
a chain by linking the pieces together to demonstrate how the talented each
student is and how their talents can work together.
Pictionary- Students draw a card with something to draw and try to draw it
as well as possible so that the other students guess what it is. Whoever
guesses the right word first gets to draw next. This game can also be played
in teams.
Funny Face Tag- One person per every five playing are chosen to be It. If
another player gets tagged by the player who is It, they must freeze and
make a funny face. Other players can unfreeze them by stopping in front of
a frozen player and making a funny face at them. The goal of the tagger is
to freeze the entire group; the game can continue until then or for a preset
time limit (3-5 minutes is ideal).
Mummy Wrap- Split kids into pairs and give each student a roll of toilet
paper, then have them race to see who can wrap their mummy in toilet
paper the fastest. You can remind them that toilet paper rips quite easily or
allow them to discover it on their own.
Y Values Chart- The YMCA’s values include caring, honesty, respect, and
responsibility. Have students fill out one large group chart or individual/small
group charts of ways that they can act out these values in their daily lives.
Name Tag Swap- Have each student write their name on a nametag then
walk around and introduce themselves to others in the room, sharing three
facts with each person they talk to. They then switch nametags with that
person and continue by introducing themselves as the person they just met
and sharing their facts. Continue for several rounds, switching each time. At
the end of the game have each student introduce themselves as whatever
nametag they are currently wearing. You can also give students specific
details to share when they introduce themselves rather than random facts
(where they were born, how many siblings, favorite school subject for
example).
Bird Feeders- Cover an object in peanut butter, roll it in bird seed, and tie
a pipe cleaner or a piece of string to use as a hanger. Good objects include:
pinecones, a piece of bread, empty toilet paper roles, and more!
Paper Flowers- Stack 3 sheets of unfolded tissue paper on a flat surface.
Fold the sheet of paper in one inch then reverse the fold so it looks like an
accordion when you are done folding the entire sheet. Fold the accordion in
half then wrap a pipe cleaner around it to secure it and act as a stem. Cut
the tissue paper ends to be about 6-7 inches long, with rounded edges. Hold
the stem and gently open up the folds by pulling one sheet straight up and
then separating the other sheets as you pull them out. Fiddle with the flower
until it is the shape you would like, being careful not to tear the paper.
