MOVING GAME PLAN - Preferred Living

MOVING GAME PLAN
Week One
You’ve found a fantastic Preferred Living Suite…congratulations!





Give proper notice to current landlord in writing!
Reserve a U-Haul/Hire Movers/Bribe friends to help right away so everyone has plenty of
advanced notice
Notice that you haven’t worn half the clothes in your closet or used that extra set of flatware you
got on clearance? Now is the time to get rid of it. Don’t move excess stuff you don’t need!
Assess which large furniture items will work in your new space. Consider giving away or selling
(example: Craigslist) furniture you cannot bring with you.
Buy packing materials. Helpful tip: grocery stores and liquor stores will often give away boxes for
free. Also, try the Craigslist “free” section and search for packing materials. When you’re finished,
you can pass them on to others who need them.
Week Two
Get down to business and put your life into boxes!




Pack! Don’t get overwhelmed. Start with the non-essential items like rarely-used kitchen devices,
clothes that are out of season, etc. As you get closer to moving day, work up to more essential
items.
Change your address with all your financial institutions, credit card providers, post office (mail
forwarding costs $1), and insurance. Also, email all your contacts to let them know you’ll be living
at a new address.
Remove artwork, photos, and wall-hangings. Patch the holes with spackle.
Stop grocery shopping and clean out your freezer. Finding a science project in your fridge on
moving day would cause anyone to have a meltdown.
Week Three
Close up the shop, get ready for the adventure ahead.




Be sure to cancel or forward utilities (gas, water, electricity, garbage, landline/cell phone,
cable/internet). Also, if you are owed any refunds from prorated service or deposits, it would be a
good idea to collect those now.
Forward or cancel magazine, newspaper, or Netflix subscriptions.
Do you have plants? Stop watering them! They won’t be as heavy and won’t drip everywhere on
the day you move (another possible cause of meltdown).
You can’t be ALL packed…so keep packing!
Week Four
Prepare for landing.




Pack a box with first-night-in-the-new place essentials. This should include sheets,
plates/cups/silverware, basic toiletries for showering, your phone, laptop, or tablet charger.
Block some time out to clean the apartment thoroughly or hire a professional cleaning service.
Give a written copy of your new address to your landlord so your security deposit can be
forwarded to you.
Conduct a final inspection of the apartment with your landlord and return the keys.
