We would like to thank all of the parents and families who recently attended our PTO bingo event held in New Market. This fundraiser added over $3,000 towards our track/playground fund. We still have a long way to go to reach our goal of $30,000, which was the one estimate we received for a paved 1/5 mile track at Plains Elementary. The end of the school year is quickly approaching and many school events will be happening in the near future. Please pay close attention to weekly grade level newsletters and our PTO Facebook page for updated information about the happenings at PES. Thank you for all of your support, 2. Students chosen to be Conflict Managers receive additional instruction, including learning a simplified version of the mediation process. Congratulations to the following 4thgrade students who were recently chosen by their classmates and teachers to become Conflict Managers! They are Claire Mathias, Angel Antuna Peralta, Asher Ryan, Tristan Yoder, Katherine Molina, Hailey Luden, Gavin Diehl, Logan Thompson, Lily Harner, Savanna Reedy, Landen Turner, Cal Mitchell, and Kaylie Lawrence. These students are perceived by others to be respectful, responsible, caring, fair, trustworthy, and good citizens. Upon completion of Conflict Manager training, which takes place some days during lunch, the students will have a celebration, receive certificates, and be ready to join the 5th grade Conflict Managers in helping other students resolve misunderstandings or friendship problems. The 5thgrade Conflict Managers were trained last year and have had a busy year. If there are students who are involved in a situation that is appropriate for peer mediation, the school counselor schedules and supervises a pair of Conflict Managers who conduct the mediation. This takes place first thing in the morning in the guidance office before classes begin. Mediation is a positive process that teaches valuable communication and conflict resolution skills, and students are always told that they are not in trouble, and that this is a good way to work out problems! The 5thgrade Conflict Managers are always eager to assist when needed. They are Tanner Dove, Clement Haddad, Jacqueline Diaz, Kalysta Clutteur, Kristian Beck, Alex Holsinger, Gaige Mathers, Lillie Morris, Leah Fulk, Gracin Vanfossen, Kara Wood, Malcolm Emswiler, and Gracie Will. The program will be at 6PM and an assembly at 1:30PM. The students are working very hard and are doing a fantastic job! CAFETERIA NEWS Spring is right around the corner. This is a time when children can finally get out in the sun and start burning off some energy. Please remember as they are using energy they will also need to replenish that supply. Breakfast is very important to all of us since this is the meal that fuels us up to start our day. If your child does not eat breakfast at home, please remember that breakfast is available at school. As we start to wind down this school year please check your child’s lunch balances and get any charges paid. These charges will not just disappear and it is better to start a new year with a zero balance. We like everyone else are looking forward to Spring Break. We hope everyone has a peaceful, relaxing but fun break. Pat Mongold, Cafeteria Manager STUDENTS WHO BRING A PACKED LUNCH If your child packs their lunch please know that the cafeteria monitors will not heat food in the microwave. If something needs to be kept warm/hot please put it in a thermos or use a hot pack in the lunch box. A huge, heart felt thank you to our students, parents and staff for your contributions to the American Heart Association through our Jump Rope for Heart campaign in February. With all of the donations totaled, we raised $3,566.77. Way to go Plains Elementary!! Thank you for caring and sharing to help others. NEWS FROM THE NURSE Permission forms for Family Life Education are being sent home in the month of March. Please make sure you choose an option and sign the form. Forms must be returned to school no later than March 24, 2017. Please know that if you choose option C, for 4th and 5th graders, they will most likely be excluded from all family life lessons as it is almost impossible to be sure information and questions will not overlap. Fourth and Fifth grades will have Family Life Instruction one day during the week before Spring Break. I encourage you to talk to your child while on break and let them share what they learned or ask questions that a parent can best answer based on their family values and ideals. If you wish to see the 4th or 5th grade FLE materials, please contact me to set up a time to view the material. I welcome thoughts or questions.
