IT Information for students in Glasney Welcome to your new accommodation. Within this document you should find all the information needed to get you connected to the Internet. During your first week at University, IT Support will be available in a number of locations Glasney Lodge, the Compass and the IT Office in the LRC, Daphne Du Maurier Building. We will be able to help you with setting up your internet for the RESNET WI-FI or any other queries you may have. If you experience any connection problems after the first week we will be available in the IT Office in the LRC, Daphne Du Maurier Building or contact the Service Desk. Email address: [email protected] Phone: 01326 213822 (Ext: 3822) How to connect your computer to the RESNET WI-FI To access RESNET WI-FI in accommodation you will need to register your device. This is very important. If you do not register your device you will not be able to access the internet. Helpful info on registering your device…. You can register as many devices as you like – e.g. iPads/tablets/phones/laptops You are not allowed file sharing software on your computer when using the University WI-FI connection. (examples of file sharing software are Limewire/BitTorrent/UTorrent etc.) If we detect a virus on your machine your internet access will be blocked and you will need to book an appointment with IT to have your computer looked at. Please don't panic we are here to help you! There will be IT staff available in Glasney Lodge and the Compass during the first week of term, they are there specifically to help you connect your computer to the WI- FI and assist you with registering your device if you have any problems. Please do not be afraid to ask if you need help. You can also contact the Service Desk for help at any time during your studies; we can be contacted by phone/email/in person. How to register your device…. You will need to register your device as soon as you connect to the RESNET WI-FI. To register you will need to: 1. Look for the wireless network called RESNET, and connect to this. 2. The following instruction page will then appear. If it does not, open your browser, and navigate to a page, e.g. cheese.com You will then see this page - 3. After clicking ‘Continue…’ you are next asked ‘What would you like to do?’ Choose between registering either the device you are currently using or a different device (such as your game console). 4. After deciding what to register you now need to choose how you want to register it. This next screen allows you to choose what details you would like to use to register with. Registering a device using your University username and password If you selected Use your University user-name and password the following screen will appear: Simply enter your university user-name and password in the fields provided and click ‘Login’. The device whose details are shown at the bottom of the screen will be registered to your username for the rest of the academic year. Please remember to enter just your username ie. ab123456 or ab123 5. If you choose to register using an E-mail address or Via SMS message (probably because you have not yet received you university user-name and password) then this will only register your device for 5 days. Registering a device using an E-Mail address or via SMS text message If you selected Register using your E-Mail address or via SMS text message you will now need to accept the Falmouth Exeter Plus terms and conditions of use – The Acceptable Usage Policy (AUP). Once you have read and understood this policy please click the arrow to confirm this. You will then be taken to the next stage. At this screen you have another choice. Do you want to continue the registration process using your E-Mail address of via an SMS text message to your mobile phone. Registering a device using an E-Mail address The E-Mail registration process is in two stages. The first stage reads in your personal details and the second is to activate the registration thus verifying that you do indeed have access to the E-Mail address provided. Click Continue… Firstly you must enter your personal details (First Name, Last Name etc) along with a valid E-Mail address that you have access to (ie gmail.com, yahoomail). A screen will be displayed briefly reminding you to check your email. You will now have internet access for 10 minutes. Within this time you will need to go into your online E-Mails. There should be 2 E-Mails in your mailbox from Packet fence. The E-Mail you will need is the one highlighted below: Simply click on the Activate your network access and you will then get the following confirmation about the registration and the date the device is registered until. Your device is now registered for 5 days. Registering via SMS To register using your mobile phone you can click on the Register via SMS message option. You will need to turn off your mobile data. You will now be asked to enter your details. Once you have entered your details simply click on Register Now and a text will be sent to your phone from JANETtxt this will have the unique network activation pin. This pin is case sensitive. Once you have entered the pin your account is then activated. You will then see the following screen which will indicate the your device has been registered for 5 days. Registering for a wired Connection or a Games Console To Register for a wired Ethernet connection for a desktop, laptop or games console, you will need to use the Device Registration page. You will need your MAC address to register – what's that I hear you ask?! Don't worry there will be information available on the Device Registration page explaining how to find your MAC address on various devices and a short video showing you what to do. http://myaccount.falmouth.ac.uk/DeviceRegistration/ You will be prompted to log in using your username and password. Notice the 'Where do I find my MAC address?' link, clicking this will direct you to a set of instructions on how to find your MAC address on various devices. You will need the MAC address to register. Once you have logged in you will need to fill in some information about your computer. Select your location. Make sure you select WIFI only from this drop down menu. You will also be able to view details of previously registered devices. Once you have registered your device you will need to restart your device and wait up to 10 minutes before it becomes 'active' on the system. The next time you start up and open your browser, it should connect to the Internet automatically and will not prompt you to enter your username and password.
