A Reduced Model of ELM Mitigation by SMBI and Pellet Injection 1 ELM dynamics in the CA model ELM mitigation by SMBI Type-II/III Type-I (π) ο Tri-unstable cellular automata(CA) model is developed to study the dynamics of H-mode pedestal, ELMs, and their control. ο CA model reproduce H-mode pedestals with various types of ELMs. ο SMBI ο SMBI increases the pedestal transport by inducing frequent small scale transport avalanches, which prevent the pedestal from building-up to profiles to trigger global peelingballooning instabilities. ο Global type-I ELMs are replaced by smaller type-II or type-III ELMs. ο Shallower injections are better for the ELM mitigation. ο Pellet Injection ο Pellet injection can force to trigger large scale ELMs and discharge of overall pedestal pressure, and thus lead to pellet pacing of ELMs. ο Deeper injections are better for the pellet pacing.
