Cinquain ("cin-kain") is a five-line form that uses a syllable count of twofour-six-eight-two. A "cinquain" (from cinq the French word for five)
usually follows this organization:

a one word title (2 syllables)

HAIKU
A Haiku poem consists of 17 unrhymed syllables organized into 3 lines. Originated in
Japan, these poems usually refer to some element of nature. They express a moment of
beauty which keeps you thinking or feeling.
Examples:
On my backyard fence
A cat sings his lonely song
Each hot summer night.
The hungry frog
resting on a lily pad
Dreams of careless flies.
Tiny hummingbirds
Dart from flower to flower
Rainbows in motion
One sparkling spring day
I saw a tiny spider
spin a web of silk.
Poem #4
Simile/Metaphor
Students will write and illustrate a simile/metaphoric poem using imagery. Students will
web, using imagery, everything associated with friendship, death, divorce, birth, or love —
what it looks like, smells like, etc. Begin with “Friendship is…”(simile) & end with
“Friendship is a…”(metaphor).
Example:
Fear is like an abducted child.
The blackness of a locked closet;
Du dum du dum (Jaws)
A scrawny black alley cat with mange
And a missing eye
NOT a white Persian;
The deep end of a swimming pool
With someone on your shoulders;
Like a 4-poster canopy bed
Plagued with dust and cobwebs
With curtains partially closed.
Fear is a garden of dead flowers

Poem #5
Preposition
Students will use their list of prepositions to write a prepositional poem.
Each line should start with a preposition. Each line should contain one prepositional phrase (not a
complete sentence). The poem should be at least 10 lines long.
Use a variety of prepositions to build meaning and create a “picture” for your readers.
Example:
The Nightingale
The nightingale flew hastily
into the enchanted forest,
through the thick tangle of trees,
across the smoldering swamp,
near a sleeping ogre,
around the shiny horn of a unicorn,
toward a grumpy giant,
between a pair of gossiping bats,
beneath the troll’s battered bridge,
away from a pair of acrobatic elves,
beyond the reach of a gruesome gremlin,
and into the dusky twilight
to return the disastrous spell to the evil witch

Poem #8
We Are North Ridge
We Are North Ridge
We are North Ridge
We are the best of the best
From the teachers
To the
Students
We are North Ridge
Nothing will stop us from succeeding
We are the wildcats!
We are a family
So we stick together
We are North Ridge
Maroon and white
We are the wildcats
Mighty and strong
With open minds and hearts
We become one once again
Hardworking, kind, & willing
We help, stand, hand-in-hand together
We are North Ridge
And one by one
We will succeed!
We will succeed!
We are North Ridge!
