ABOUT PLAYTIME
Playtime is a nursery for children from 0-5 years. We have 4 areas catering for
Babies, Toddlers, 2’s & 3’s, and Pre-school.
We occupy a large detached house with a landscaped garden at the rear. We are
conveniently situated 1 mile from Sutton Coldfield town centre with major bus routes
passing just outside. The nursery backs on to the Good Hope Hospital site enabling
parents dropping off children to use the car park at the rear, accessed via the
hospital entrance in Bedford Road. There is parking on the front for visitors.
The nursery has been open since 1990 owned and managed by Bev Davenport, a
Registered Nurse and Health Visitor. In 2013 she was joined by Lisa Reynolds Nursery Manager.
At our last Ofsted inspection we received the highest grading possible and were
rated OUTSTANDING in all areas. There is a direct link to it on our web site or you
can find it via www.Ofsted.gov.uk
OPENING HOURS
07:45-17:45 Monday-Friday. We close for Bank Holidays and one week at
Christmas.
STAFF
All of our permanent staff hold an early year’s qualification level 3 or above (NNEB,
BTEC, CACHE or NVQ). Two staff have Early Years Degrees and one is an Early
Years Teacher. We take advantage of the varied further training opportunities on
offer with Birmingham’s Early Years Training Team to keep our practice up to date.
The staff are consistent in each group, and every child has a key person as a first
point of contact. We have 2 outside teachers visiting weekly – Martin the music man
and Katie the dance teacher who does dance and drama.
MEALS
The children eat within their room groups and with the staff as it offers a great social
opportunity. Our cook, Heidi, prepares a freshly cooked lunch daily from a healthy
and varied menu. Special diets can be catered for. A light tea is also provided – eg
sandwich selection, vegetable sticks and homemade cakes. Breakfast is optional
and an additional charge. Water is on offer all day and we have a mid
morning/afternoon snack time with milk, water and a choice of fruit and snacks.
We achieved the Birmingham City Council’s Healthy Setting Award.

CURRICULUM
The Early Years Foundation stage is a framework which provides the guidance for
children’s learning and our legal requirements. It covers children from birth to the end
of their reception year at school. The emphasis is on getting to know each child as an
individual and working closely with parents. We include free flowing activities
throughout the day, and planned activities based on children’s needs and interests.
Our staff have all attended training on the EYFS and will be happy to answer your
questions. See www.foundationyears.org for more information
BABY ROOM
We can have up to six babies in our cosy baby room with two staff members’. We
welcome parents to make visits before starting at the nursery to meet the staff,
children and other parents, and of course, to settle your baby in. We can also make
a home visit if you wish. We realise that communication with parents is important
and staff build good relationships to aid communication and make the transition to
nursery easier. We keep you informed about your baby’s day both verbally and with
a daily diary sheet. You are always welcome to call the nursery throughout the day to
check-in too.
TODDLERS
Our toddler group are generally between 18months and 2.5 years. Toddlers like
painting, sticking, colouring, stories, singing, imaginative play, sand and water,
cooking and music. They have direct access to our garden and love to be outside in
all weathers. There are always a few of the toddlers “potty training”, and we are
happy to help with that. They sit at the table together for meals and snack times
developing their social skills. We have rest beds for those who need a nap after
lunch.
2’s & 3’s
This group of older 2 year olds and younger 3 year olds are on the first floor and
have two play rooms, including an interactive whiteboard, listening and computer
area. They are a lively lot and love to get messy, look at the many photos of
themselves on display or just relax in the book corner with friends.
PRE-SCHOOL
We have a well-equipped pre-school area for 16 children. Our pre-school
practitioners, Sue and Jayne provide an enabling learning environment with lots of
variety, interest and most of all fun. Preschool make the most of the outdoors going
out to play every day.
FREE SESSIONS FOR 3 YEAR OLDS
We operate the Nursery Education Funding Scheme. This means that the term after
your child is 3 you will get up to 15 hours of free nursery education per week during
term time.
Some parents may be entitled to 2 yr old funding, please enquire if you think you may
be eligible or visit www.birmingham.gov.uk/2yearolds to find out more.
OUR FANTASTIC OUTDOOR SPACE
Our garden has winding paths to ride along, a climbing frame, a sandpit, logs to step
along, a living willow den and a safe grassed circle for babies. We have plants with
lovely smells, textures, colours and sound. The children help plant and care for our
vegetable plot every year – and we eat our crops at mealtimes. The decking around
the house provides a level entrance. There is a fantastic wooden adventure play
unit, a beautiful hand built playhouse with furniture, a climbing wall, and picnic table
where children can enjoys snacks and meals outdoors.
