Curriculum plan for Ladybirds
Senses
Autumn 2
Ladybirds will be focusing on making
relationships and awareness of others by:
turn taking and sharing. Ladybirds will be
encouraging the children to express their
feelings using their individual communication
systems and using the ‘I feel...’ board.
Opportunities will be available to experience
messy play and sensology.
Opportunities will be offered to explore the
world through our senses - how we see, hear,
smell, feel and taste. We will learn about hot
and cold, melting ice cubes; explore different
textures with our feet and hands; experience
different tastes/smells in sensology and listen
to different sounds in the sensory room.
In maths we will be exploring numbers in a
variety of ways such as singing number songs
& rhymes; sorting and counting at tidy up
time; building with blocks; playing with
magnetic numbers and number puzzles;
grouping and sorting objects and working on
1-1 correspondence (touching objects with
one finger and counting). We will be tracing
sensory numerals with our fingers.
Books including sensory books will be on
offer daily &Ladybird will be accessing the
school library to encourage them to handle
books, enjoy pictures and repetitive print.
Our story will be ‘That’s not my cat’. The
children will be encouraged to recognise
repeated words or phrases from familiar
stories. Ladybirds will have opportunities to

The children will continue with their
individual methods of communication such as
the spoken word, PECs, Makaton (or all)
Tacpac is on our planning, which is a sensory
communication resource using touch and
music to aid communication/social skills. The
children will be more familiar with ‘objects of
reference’ for transitioning. We will also be
using our transition music for areas in school.
Whilst playing and exploring, the children will
begin to learn to share their interests and
favourite activities. There will be free flow
play to explore independently, make choices
and access new challenges. The children will
be encouraged to take off and hang up their
own coat and put their bags in their tubs.
They will also be encouraged to put their
drinking bottles/cups in the tray after snack.
has finished.
In Expressive Arts and Design, the children
will be encouraged to communicate through
movement & play. We will be continuing with
‘Wake & Shake’ singing ‘hokey kokey’ to
establish routine. The children will be
experimenting with different textures such as
fur, shiny paper, and sandpaper. We will
listen to music which will be fast and slow
and try to mirror our body movements.
Ladybirds will build on their fine motor skills
by manipulating with different resources such
as play dough, crayons, peg boards and
puzzles. We will be playing with the large
parachute to create ‘wind’ and ‘fast and slow’
movements. Ladybirds will be learning to
balance on vestibular aids, either sitting or
standing.
