Inspired by the quote we wanted to develop an app that creates awareness and
demand for generic medicines. Considering the facts that people spend most of their
incomes on medicines and healthcare services.
Also India ranks 3rd in out of pocket(OOP) expenses in healthcare in south-east
region. Around 78% of healthcare expenditure in India is out-of-pocket of which 72%
is spent on medicines. To reduce the cost of expenditure people should be made
aware of the low cost generics.
We started with this idea as our base but the next ques was how to incorporate SAP
HANA and its features and leverage its use. We extensively thought about all the
missing links in the healthcare sector and came with the usecase as follows
We do not focus only on the consumer in our new usecase but the manufacturer and
the pharmacist too. The 3 key role players in our usecase are1. Consumer/patient
2. Pharmacist/Chemist
3. Manufacturers
All the 3 actors have distinct functionalities and harnesses the full potential of the
healthcare sector.
Lets discuss the functionalities associated with each of our key role actors
THE CONSUMER
He’s the one who will be consuming the drugs or the end user.
1. He can search for generic drugs.
What are generics or generic drugs? Consider an example your doctor has
prescribed you a branded drug. There exists another drug having the same salt
as your branded drug but is cheaper.
2. The app has a personal account for each consumer having the details about
the users vital stats such as age, medical history if any, list of medications, list
of medicines the user may be allergic too. It also contains two emergency
numbers that one may contact in case of any emergency. This is a basic
requirement as the doctors can have a view of my health before putting the
person on medication.
3. It has been seen that we generally tend to forget to take medicines on time, it
usually happens considering our busy lifestyle and schedules. Not taking
medicines regularly or on time can adversely affect one’s health and may even
result in grave results. To combat this human behaviour MEDASSAY
depending on your medication frequency, taking the frequency, medicine
names plans out a chart for you and informs you each time to take your
medicine. This not only helps you to remind you, but also keeps a tab on the
times you have missed your medicine.
4. Online ordering : You need to just open the app type in your prescription
details. While entering the generics it also lists out the cheaper generics
available. You can easily choose of what you want. A major concern in this
area is of the increase in sale of Schedule X drugs and also no medicines
should be sold without prescription. To solve this problem we have refrenced
a six step procedure:
Schedule X drug includes Narcotic and Psychotropic drugs: They usually cause
delusion, hallucination, psychosis, sedation, hypnosis etc.
Schedule H drugs includes a list of prescription drugs shall be labelled as follows, if it
contains a substance specified in Schedule H.
--labelled with symbol Rx conspicuously displayed on the left top corner of the label.
--labelled with words "Schedule- H Drug -warning. to be sold by retail on the
prescription of a registered medical practitioner only".
THE PHARMACIST/RETAILER
The pharmacist or the retailer is involved in providing the consumers with medicine.
In India a commonly present scenario is that medicines are sold without any
prescription and even a bill stating the purchase of medicines isn’t made. Despite of
governments initiative the prescriptions aren’t considered mandatory. Medicines are
at large being sold over the counter i.e. without any prescriptions.
Medassay creates inventory’s for the retailer. The sales order can be made by the
through the app and the bill generated, also the e-bill can be transferred to the
personal account of the consumer/patient.
The retailer in real time can check its daily sales and implement analytic tools of SAP
HANA to increase its business.
To check fraudlent prescriptions each prescription has the Ref ID number of the
doctor, Medassay checks the database and approves or disapproves the prescriptions.
THE MANUFACTURER
The amount of research for recognising the healthcare sector isn’t at par comparing
with the amount of expenditure per capita going to this sector. To increase the
understanding of the market expectations and understanding the customer
requirements and expectations it is necessary to implement SAP HANA tools for
analysis in real time such that the manufacturer’s can have real time knowledge
about the market and its competitors.
