The benefits of playing at the park

EXCURSION TO THE PARK
Throughout Term two the children have had the opportunity to go on a number of
excursion to the Bowen Street Reserve, adjacent to the kindergarten. At Sunnyside
we believe it is essential that our programs reflect the children’s voices. During a
group meeting the children explained that they would like more room to run around
and play group games. The teachers worked collaboratively with the children to
come up with a solution and thus the Excursions to the park began. The educators
conducted a risk assessment prior to the first visit and the children were actively
involved in setting boundaries to ensure the safety of the whole group during the
excursion.
Each time we go to the park there is a sense of excitement as we all head out on a
special adventure together. Just the process of getting to the reserve provides the
children with opportunity to develop new skills and a sense of responsibility.

collect the balls or other equipment.
Collect their water bottles
Take themselves to the toilet
Collect their jacket
Find their partner
One child will carry the emergency bag
The experience is very empowering for them, they are respected as active
members of our class group.
The park provides the children with space to run and play freely. They happily
participate in a range of collaborative games without having to dodge equipment
in the kinder grounds. It has been wonderful to observe the children practice their
cartwheels, forward rolls and ball skills.
“Outdoor unstructured, free play allows children to use their imaginations whilst
building dexterity and physical strength. Children can take advantage of open
spaces and fine tune their motor skills by being physical and adventurous.” New
South Wales Government Website.
The children have also made some wonderful discoveries while at the reserve, they
have observed mushrooms, collected items of interest and found some new hiding
places.
After the excursion the children were asked to reflect on their experiences and what
they enjoyed about going to the park.
Because there’s lot’s of space
Because we have a bigger area
Cause its so much fun. We get to play Hide and Seek
Because we can kick the football
We will continue to visit the reserve throughout the year. Thank you for your support.
