DIPARTIMENTO DI MATEMATICA UNIVERSITÀ DEGLI STUDI DI ROMA ‘TOR VERGATA’ Via della Ricerca Scientifica 1 – 00133 ROMA COLLOQUIA DI DIPARTIMENTO 2009 Richard Stanley M.I.T. Increasing and decreasing subsequences Lunedì 25 maggio 2009 ore 14.30 Aula ‘Dal Passo’ Dipartimento di Matematica Abstract: An increasing subsequence of a permutation a1, a2, ..., an of 1,2,...,n is a subsequence b1 < ... < bk of elements that occur in increasing order. Similarly define decreasing subsequence. We will survey the theory of increasing and decreasing subsequences. Topics will include the connection with Young tableaux and the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) algorithm, the expected length is(w) of the longest increasing subsequence of a random permutation w of 1,2...,n (due to Logan-Shepp and Vershik-Kerov), the limiting distribution of is(w) (due to Baik-Deift-Johansson), a connection with random matrices, and a variation concerned with alternating subsequences.
