BEHAVIOUR POLICY: April 2016
INTRODUCTION
The mission statement for our school reads:
‘Be The BEST You Can Be’
We strongly believe that in order for children to be the BEST they can be, they need to be taught the importance
of choosing responsible behaviour which will enable them to conduct themselves appropriately in a range of
situations.
This policy outlines the principles and strategies implemented in school to ensure that all children are aware of
what is expected of them, how they will be rewarded if they display appropriate behaviours and consequences
that will be followed if they choose not to follow the school rules. Our policy is based on POSITIVE
reinforcement and the teaching of good behaviour.
SCHOOL CODE
All aspects of behaviour management are linked to the school rules. The set of school rules detailed below were
drawn up in consultation with staff and pupils and are displayed in all areas of the school.
SCHOOL CODE
• Be kind
MOVEMENT AROUND THE SCHOOL
 All children should walk in the
school building at all times

Children should enter and leave
assemblies in silence.

Staff should lead the line of
children when moving around the
school, i.e. to the hall, to lunch
• Be honest
• Be responsible
• Show respect
PROCEDURES FOR END OF
PLAYTIME/LUNCHTIME
• Try our BEST
Be The Best You can Be….
All children are expected to follow
these school rules and procedures

1st bell: children to find a space
and stand still

2nd bell: children to stop talking
and walk to their class lines
Members of staff must supervise
children as they come back into
the school building.
REWARDS FOR POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR
BEST house points:
 Children will be rewarded BEST house points for ‘above’ the expected in relation to the 4 key values.
 One BEST house point will be awarded for children who stay on ‘GREEN’ all day
 House points will be recorded by adults on the class chart
 Points will be totalled weekly (individual and house totals)
Individual BEST House Points:
o A record of each child’s house points will be kept every week so they can ‘spend’ them in the
BEST award shop at the end of each half term.
o Child in each class with the most house points will be celebrated in Good News each week and
given a BEST House Point Sticker in assembly
o A text message to be sent home to inform parents.
House Totals:
o House totals will be collected for Good News to earn tokens for BEST house collection (tubes).
o The house with the most tokens each half term will earn a house treat such as DVD and popcorn
afternoon.
BEST Award Shop
 This will be set up for last day of each half term so that the children can ‘spend’ their points. The award
shop will be run by the inclusion team and house captains.
CONSEQUENCES FOR INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR
If a child chooses not to follow the school code and displays inconsiderate or inappropriate behaviour, staff
will initially give a non-verbal sign of disapproval and then a verbal comment, i.e. initial positive comment to
others modelling good behaviour.
If a child continues to demonstrate unacceptable behaviour, the following procedures will be followed
throughout the school:
Reception
• Use of sad/happy frogs. These will be reversible throughout the day.
• Yellow card (hides the sad frog). Parents informed. Child to miss some playtime - reflection needed.
• Red card – discussion with inclusion team. Parents informed. Possible Head of School involvement.
KS1

The consequences outlined above will be applied if children choose to demonstrate inappropriate behaviour, for
example:
 Shouting out in class
 Disrupting other children in class
 Talking during lessons
 Silly noises
 Making marks on other children’s work
 Throwing equipment in class
More serious inappropriate behaviour resulting in an instant red card would be described as:
 Bullying – verbal and physical
 Theft and dishonesty
 Vandalism and misuse of property
 Racist or obscene behaviour
 Swearing
 Insolence to any adult
If it is considered necessary pupils may be excluded from selected events, i.e. trips, team games, and visits or be
put onto a ‘report’ card for a given period of time.
PLAY TIME AND LUNCHTIME RULES
It is imperative that children follow the agreed school rules at all times, including playtimes and lunchtimes. We
want all children to enjoy the social occasion of eating their lunch with the other children and to enjoy playing
with each other. As a result, some simple rules have been agreed in order to promote good behaviour in the
dining hall and playground in addition to the general school rules. They are as follows:
WHEN WE ARE EATING
ON THE PLAYGROUND
We……
We…..
 Talk quietly to other children
 Eat our own lunch and not share it
with other people or throw food
around
 Stay in our seats when we are
eating
 Tidy up our own mess
 Respect and use equipment
appropriately
 Play fairly and carefully
 Treat other children and adults as we
would like to be treated
 Follow timetables
 Do not play fight
REWARDS AND CONSEQUENCES AT PLAYTIMES AND LUNCHTIMES IF CHILDREN CHOOSE TO FOLLOW OR NOT
TO FOLLOW THESE RULES
PLAY TIME / LUNCHTIME REWARDS
Rewards for demonstrating expected and above behaviour include:
•
Stickers, BEST House points
CONSEQUENCES WHEN EATING LUNCH:
• 1st warning: child reminded of expected behaviours
• 2nd warning: moved to another table/room
• If behaviour persists, teacher will be informed and child will be asked to complete a ‘reflection sheet’
during the next playtime.
• Parents will be informed (letter sent home)
CONSEQUENCES IN THE PLAYGROUND
• 1st warning: child reminded of acceptable behaviour
• 2nd warning: five minutes time out on playground
• If behaviour persists during the same lunchtime, the teacher will be informed and child will be asked to
complete a ‘reflection journal’ during the next playtime
• Repeated incidents of unacceptable behaviour will lead to a red card and parents will be informed
(letter sent home)
Bullying (Reference should be made to anti-bullying policy)
Bullying is a totally unacceptable form of behaviour. We take bullying very seriously. Bullying involves the
persistent physical or verbal abuse of another child or children. It is characterised by intent to hurt, often
planned, and accompanied by an awareness of the impact of the bullying behaviour.
Bullying will not be tolerated in school but we would wish to distinguish between:


Single incidents which will be dealt with through the procedures described earlier:
Repeated, systematic or continual incidents, which will be, regarded as serious bullying
All allegations of bullying will be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. When investigating accusations of
bullying, staff will follow these procedures:
 The head teacher should be informed
 Be very careful of accusing unless substantial evidence is gathered or witnessed by an adult. We may act
on children’s comments but accusations of guilt do require proof:
 The class teacher or head teacher will inform parents. The children involved may be at this meeting to
provide their views
 This will then be followed up at a later date with the parents to ensure that no further incidents have
taken place
 Written records of these incidents will be recorded by the head teacher
Where bullying is found:
 The protection and support of the victim will be our first priority
 Proven bullies will be dealt with in accordance to the above procedures and there will be a loss of
privileges, i.e. house captain, sports captain, and ‘internal exclusions’, i.e. loss of playtimes and
lunchtimes for a given period of time. Pupils will also be asked to write a letter of apology.
Individual Behaviour Targets
For some children with special educational needs, it may be appropriate to introduce specific behaviour targets
as part of an Individual Education Plan. If this is considered necessary, parents will be fully consulted and
involved in the process. This may result in a different system of behaviour management being used with that
child to ensure that they are able to access their learning and all aspects of school life.
Use of Physical Restraint
A number of adults employed at The Robinswood Primary Academy Trust have the authorisation to physically
restrain a pupil if the need arises. Any physical restraint will be carried out in line with national guidance. These
members of staff have completed the Team Teach Training programme in April 2016. The control must be
reasonable in all cases to prevent the child from doing any of the following:



Committing a criminal offence
Injuring themselves or others
Causing damage to property
Exclusion from School
If it is considered appropriate to exclude a child for any length of time from school, procedures followed will be
as those outlined in the Gloucestershire County Council guidance. Further information regarding exclusions can
be found at the following link:

Monitoring and Evaluation of Policy
This policy has been drawn up in consultation with all staff and pupils.
The implementation of the policy is the responsibility of all members of staff.
The effectiveness of the policy will be monitored by the Heads of School and senior leadership team on behalf of
the Trust and Advisory Boards.
The policy will be reviewed every two years.
