Assistant Coach
Position Description
Term of appointment
The term of appointment is intended to be effective from day of appointment to the
completion of the 2018 World Championships in Sydney, pending a successful review at the
conclusion of the 2017 Asia Oceania Games.
A successful review will be measured by achievements to the key performance indicators
established by the NZWR committee and Head Coach.
Functions

Support the Head Coach of the New Zealand wheelchair Rugby team, the Wheel Blacks
(WB) in all its functions.

To work effectively within the established coaching structure to ensure WB success

Support the national team program in conjunction with the Head Coach, NZWR, NZWR
selectors, and Paralympics New Zealand
Responsibilities
The Assistant coach (AC) will be responsible for:
Communication and relationships

Establish a working relationship with the Head Coach (HC) to deliver the agreed
training programme, specifically the responsibility of roles and task within this plan.

Support the preparation of the athletes, including the organisation (on court) and
conduct of training camps, monitoring the programs of squad members in
conjunction with the Head coach, trainer etc

Represent NZWR where possible at National Championships, coaching seminars and
promotional functions upon reasonable requests. Act as an ambassador for technical
matters related to NZWR (as directed by the Head Coach) and at all times act in a
manner that will enhance the reputation, image, and character of NZWR

Athlete performance

With the Head Coach, record and chart athlete performances and make these records
available to NZWR annually.

Engage in regular effective feedback to the WB squad athletes the areas of
development expected of them to achieve Wheel Black selection

Support the management team (captain, Head coach) the athletes program and
create an operational plan, in agreement with NZWR, including any activities that
involve the squad's physical and mental preparation

Support the Head coach in the the necessary training programs of the squad
members in conjunction with High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ) sport
science coordinators and providers

Assist the Head Coach with advise to the athletes during camps, training sessions,
competitions and tournaments
Technical

Demonstrate and develop tactical and strategic knowledge of wheelchair rugby using
the management team ( HC, captains )

Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the current rules and regulations, classification
system and protest procedures

The assistant coach shall be committed to undertake on-going coach education,
including strategies on effective communication, team building and relationships etc
Development

Work with the network of wheelchair rugby coaches within New Zealand wheelchair
rugby and assist in developing coaching links within the international coaching
community

Assist the Head Coach in the identifing athletes for the New Zealand team including
development teams. This is in consultation with the NZWR selectors and committee
and in conjunction with all NZWR selection policies and procedures

The major competition for this term are:


2017 Oceania Zone Championship
2018 World Championships
Other key dates (including training camps and 2017- 2018 competitions) will be determined
in consultation with NZWR
Accountability

The assistant coach will be directly responsible to the Head Coach and committee of
NZWR,

The assistant coach will work with the agreed coaching structure ( eg head coach ,
trainers etc) and the NZWR committee to plan and implement an operational plan
Remuneration
The position is honorary.
NZWR will pay all reasonable expenses incurred when the assistant coach is involved with
approved team activities. This includes documented phone calls, travel and accommodation
expenses. This may or may not be a travelling role depending on the needs of the team and
the tournament environment.
If the head coach is injured when they are involved in team activities, they will be covered
under ACC or the team insurance policy.
Termination
If for any reason the terms of the contract are not able to be fulfilled, either party may
terminate it by giving “one month notice” in writing.
