County 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Challenge Event
Overview
Objective
The purpose of the County 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Challenge Event is to allow
participants the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of nutrition, fitness,
health, safety and consumerism topics while providing a format by which to select
delegates for the State 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Challenge Event.
Participant Preparation
Participation in 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Clubs provides the basis for the participant
to gain knowledge about topics that will be included in the County 4-H Healthy
Lifestyles Challenge Event. Individual clubs should be encouraged to have youth
practice their consumer judging and identification skills at home and at meetings.
Clubs should be notified of curriculum and resources available at the county
extension office and on the 4-H website.
Facility
The County 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Challenge Event is well-suited for a variety of
facilities. Consult the challenge descriptions for specific space needs for each
particular challenge.
Refreshments
County 4-H Advisory Councils, Teen Councils, or individual clubs may be asked to
provide a refreshment booth, which could be done as a service activity or as a
fundraiser.
Challenge Monitors
Challenge monitors should be recruited for this event; their role is to ensure that
the Identification and Consumerism Challenge participants are abiding by the
Challenge rules including not talking or cheating and that the presenter is
announced and not interrupted during the second half of the Activity Challenge.

Identification Challenge
Rather than taking a written test, tactile and/or visual images are presented and participants
must apply their knowledge by showing the relationship between items. Possible
relationships may be:
 Matching portion sizes to food item
 Matching food item to its food source
 Matching equipment to its sport
 Matching nutritional value to food item / dish / meal
 Matching first aid care to injury
 Matching body part to function
 Matching exercise to muscle group / objective
When the physical materials are unavailable, photographs or other visual images may be
used. Questions should be spaced on tables or desks far enough apart to allow for
participants to move at their own pace through the items without crowding each other. The
participants may not help each other and should not talk so as to avoid distracting other
participants.
This challenge should have at least 30 questions, equally divided between nutrition, fitness,
and general health and safety topics. For easier scoring it is recommended that this challenge
be designed in a multiple choice fashion.
Activity Challenge
A set of common items will be provided. Participants will be given up to five minutes to
create an exercise routine or physically active game utilizing these items. Upon presenting
and demonstrating this routine / game to the judge(s), participants should include
information on the fitness objective of the activity, potential health benefits of the activity,
and rules of the game (if applicable).
Possible items include:
 Empty boxes
 Balls
 Milk jugs or soda bottles
 Empty baskets
 Balloons
 Hula hoops
 Pillows
 Chairs
 Canned food
 Rope or string
A minimum of two separate rooms (or quiet areas) will be needed for this challenge; one
room in which the participant can prepare and create their activity, and a second room in
which they can present their activity for judging. These rooms will need to have enough
open space to allow for the activities to be safely performed. Other considerations for room
selection should include ceiling (height, light fixtures, etc.), flooring (concrete, wood, rug,
grass, etc), and any protruding items that may be along the perimeter of the room/area.

Consumerism Challenge
Based on the specific needs scenario presented, participants must rank the possible purchase
choices from best product to worst. One scenario should be pre-selected for participants to
provide oral reasons explaining their decision making process. This allows participants to
practice their reasoning, organization, and speaking skills while defending their decision
making process. Possible shopping scenarios may relate to:
 Food products / Nutritional labels
 Nutritional supplements
 Sports equipment
 Health club memberships
 First aid supplies
 Hygiene care
 Safety and prevention items
When the physical materials are unavailable, photographs or other visual images may be
used. Questions should be spaced on tables or desks far enough apart to allow for
participants to move at their own pace through the items without crowding each other. The
participants may not help each other and should not talk so as to avoid distracting other
participants.
This challenge should have at least 3 questions, equally divided between nutrition, fitness,
and general health and safety choices. When presenting oral reasons, Junior participants
should have the option of using notes; Senior participants should be penalized for using
notes while presenting.
A minimum of three separate rooms (or quiet areas) will be needed for this challenge; one
room for the display of the items being judged (grouped by class), a second room in which
the participant can prepare their oral reasons, and a third room in which they can present
their reasons for judging.

that promote health education and action. A specific campaign approach will be selected
each year. Possible campaigns may be

 Songs
 T-shirts
 Flyers
The items created for this challenge should have a submission date at least two weeks prior
to the event to allow for sufficient judging time. If an earlier date can be arranged, there is
the possibility of having the winning campaign printed and provided to all the participants
on the day of the event. Recognition of participants and awards for this challenge should be
given at the event.
Service Challenge
An Electronic Scrapbook is submitted that explains a community health issue, the action
implemented to address that issue, and the results of that action. Multiple awards may be
given to recognize greatest number impacted, most potential for long term change, best use
of collaborations and partnerships, etc.
 Individual project
 Team/Club Project
The scrapbooks created for this challenge should have a submission date at least two weeks
prior to the event to allow for sufficient judging time. If an earlier date can be arranged,
there is the possibility of having the scrapbooks posted on a web site by the day of the event.
