Brighton Grammar played some extraordinary matches against

Brighton Grammar played some extraordinary matches against Wesley Last Saturday 18 th of
March 2017 at 1pm in the Wesley College sport centre. Congratulations to Harrison as he has well
deservingly won the most improved out of the single. A mention to Victor Luo, Ryan Dang and
Tony Ma for their enthusiastic effort and their good team work in their doubles match. And one
more shout out to Oscar Lo and Josh Foulds for their long match. Overall on the day Brighton
Grammar were victorious, winning 8 rubbers to 4 and 15 games to 9.
Thank you again to all the parents for coming along to support their boys
MAN OF THE MATCH: Lachy Miller 10 and only 6 byes
Toby Marsden lost the toss and as a result BGS were bowling first. This appeared to be a blessing, as a wet
outfield meant St. Kevins had trouble scoring early on. Callan Cummins (2/7 off 4 overs) and Harry Harte
(0/6 off 2 overs) bowled beautifully, giving away no easy runs. Aaron Aloi (1/15 off 4 overs) and Marcus
Mittermayr (1/10 off 3 overs) kept things tight, as St. Kevins crawled to 1/20 off 10 overs. However, St.
Kevins were then able to get on top, as they raced to 92 in the 22 over before the second wicket was taken
by Callan. St. Kevins finished with a big total of 7/125 off 30 overs, despite some tight bowling from Jono
Hick (0/6 off 2 overs) and Luke Hill (1/11 off 4 overs) late in their innings.
Losing Jono Hick for 1 in the first over of our innings made the task at hand look daunting. However, Lachy
Miller (10) and Oliver Lally (3) then combined for a partnership of 13 to try to rebuild the innings. Then
there was a collapse. BGS fall from 1/14 in the eighth over, to all out for 22 in the fifteenth. A
disappointing effort in a game where we looked like a chance of winning at the change of innings.
The 8C's faced Geelong College on the Mitchell Oval for the second time this season and
struggled to take wickets early on, with Geelong's opening batting stand getting them off to a
marvellous start. Our first breakthrough came in the 8th over of the 20/20 match from Harrison
Fulton, who bowled a very tidy spell alongside his wicket. However, the standout bowling
performance for the day was from the efforts of Tom Farrelly, whose two overs involved three
team run outs and a wicket. Tom's season best performance shifted the momentum after
Geelong's strong start and proved how tidy bowling will build a great deal of pressure and cause
wickets to fall, resulting in BGS then needing 91 runs to win.
After scoring 9 runs off the first over, Vasilli K and Nic M both looked keen to score but accurate
bowling from Geelong sparked a collapse and we lost 4 quick wickets within the space of 3 overs,
yet again putting us on the back foot. We won 7 wickets down with 15 balls remaining. Ned
Ansell-Jones batted superbly at the death.
It was our final Saturday, 2 days before the APS finals on Monday. Everyone’s last chance to swim
their best and try to make the team. This week we were competing at St Kevin’s against St Kevin’s
College and Carey. We had some great swims in the relays this weekend such as the Under 13
Freestyle relay, the Butterfly relay, and the Under 14 Breaststroke relay. Everyone swam valiantly
at the last Saturday of the season.
On the grass courts of Carey Bulleen Sports complex Harley Kessells was the only player able to win both
his sets. Unfortunately, 2 tie break losses again put BGS behind in the doubles. BGS were victorious in 3 of
the 8 singles matches with David Canta, who had a bye with the firsts losing 0-6, coming up against a very
strong opponent at number 1. James Capp and James Cannuli both had 6-3 wins, handling the low bounce
well. Adam Larkan fought his singles out eventually going down 4-6.
The teams were evenly matched with some exciting rallies on both sides. The doubles
matches were the least productive, but in all cases well played and positive experiences.
Max Mozina worked well with Charles Yao for a powerful win in the doubles followed by a
very positive win in the singles.
BGS 5 sets, 29 games DEF by Carey 5 sets, 37 games
After a delayed start due to club matches running over time, the doubles rubbers were shortened
to 4 games. The games were tight with only narrow losses at the end. In the singles matches, BGS
started to peg back some dropped games. Matthew Bates proved why he is ranked 1 with strong
win over his Carey opponent with some fierce forehand returns and movement around the court.
Casper Payne and Eli Akinci continued to show promise with a win, whilst newcomer to the team,
James Bourke capped off a fantastic day. With one fixture to go, the boys are excited to finish the
season on a high.
After the long weekend the 7B Cricket boys were back playing in there first home game of year on
the Mitchell Oval. The match changing to a 20/20 did not faze BGS as we were able to get off to
an aggressive start with Flynn B and Liam C scoring quick runs and building a strong opening
partnership. Archie May and Tom Rohan kept the momentum in BGS's favour, with both boys
retiring after making a solid 25 runs. Oliver Robertson and Max Morris then added some valuable
runs in the last few overs to steer BGS to 4/141 off 20 overs. There was no standout bowler for
the tonners with it being a shared effort to restrict Caulfield to 92 off there 20 overs. In saying
that, the opening three bowlers, of Tom O’Connor, Ben Curtis and Max Langworthy all proved to
be difficult for the batsmen to get away and were all in the wicket takers. This win takes BGS to 22 on the season and eager to get a win in the final game of the year.
The 7C1 team travelled to St. Kevin’s on a cold foggy morning for an 8am start. We lost the toss and
were in the field first having to deal with a wet slippery ball. Despite this the opening bowlers of Tom
Jackett-Smith and Samson Adams (0/8) bowled a tidy spell. There was a run out on the first ball of the
game and an early wicket taken in the 3rd over restricting St. Kevin’s to 2/5 early on. However, St. Kevin’s
recovered through some good batting picking off any loose delivery. We continued to press for a wicket
and managed to get it through a caught behind off Tom Stretch’s bowling. Two more wickets fell quickly to
have St. Kevin’s at 5/62 after 14 overs. However, we lost concentration through some poor bowling and
lethargic fielding saw us chasing more than we should have.
We got off to a nightmare start losing both openers in the first over to a quick St. Kevin’s bowler.
Tom Stretch (12) fought hard in the top order but eventually succumbed to the pressure like many of his
teammates to leave us 6/39 after 14 overs. Jack Stewart (19) and Tom Jackett-Smith (11) put a high price
on their wickets and batted with a positive intent to try and chase down the remaining runs.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be though as the team suffered their first loss for the season.
The 7C2 tennis team were greeted with a great morning as the sun was out which made for an
excited squad that were ready to play. The teamwork of Brassachio and Field were terrific with
Massimo’s perfect serving and Will’s powerful shots and encouragement. Again, Finn WatsonHook and Will Stebbing continued to prove that hard work will lead to improvements as they
made less errors and played great as a team. Unfortunately Jarrad Thomson suffered an injury
during the game so Isiah Delana stepped in and worked well with Isaac Lee who was playing
great. Special thanks to Will Stebbing, Isiah Delana and Jerry Chen for playing extra games and
helping the team out.
and MS3 match drawn.
Unfortunately for MS1 touch rugby team this wasn't our best game playing Haileybury, one of the
top teams. The spirit of the boys and the talk among us was good, but their offense was just overpowering. BGS went down eight tries to none. Although the day didn't go so well, the trip to
Mcdonald’s definitely added to the fun.
MS 3 played very well this week as we developed our game skills in a friendly match with MS 2.
We continued what we had been working on in training and tried some new tactics and set plays.
We also found new ways to score tries resulting in a very high scoring match. The top try scorers
were Jordan Bourke, Connor Marriott, Jonah Campigli. Will Biddick and George McDowell. Harry
Cornwell played well in the midfied, shooting off great passes to players on the wing to run and
score.
MS5 fought valiantly , but lost their game against Haileybury 8-1. Team communication and
rucking was much improved from BGS and was a highlight on the day. Slide defence and not
allowing the wingers to get sucked in continues to be an area for improvement.
MS6 had a great game, beating Haileybury 5 to 3. As a team we rucked the ball up very straight
on offence resulting in tries. We also had good communication between the whole team. One
thing we could improve on is when we are on defence we have to stay closer to each other so
that the other team has no gaps they can run through and score a try. Try scorers: Zac Landsman,
2, Andrew Penca 1, Nick Verga 1, Aaron Mickelborough 1.
