Black Sea Interconnection (BSI) 7th Framework Programme of European Commission project Arthur Petrosyan ([email protected]) Academic Scientific Research Network of Armenia (ASNET-AM) Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems (IIAP) of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (NAS RA) www.asnet.am www.sci.am www.blacksea-net.org Black Sea Interconnection is co-funded by the EC under the FP7 Research Infrastructures BSI Overview Republic of Armenia is participating in the Black Sea Interconnection (BSI) project, which is being implemented under 7th Framework Programme of European Commission (FP7). The BSI project will develop a high-speed backbone network among the NRENs of the South Caucasus countries and enable connectivity to the pan-European research and education GÉANT2 network. BSI is a 24 month project that will start in the second quarter of 2008. The regional network and the connection to GEANT is planned to be operational in the sixth month of the project and will be available for the remaining 18 months BSI Participants • National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (NAS RA) • Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey – Turkish Academic Network and Information Center (TÜBİTAK-ULAKBIM) • Greek Research & Technology Network (GRNET) • Central and Eastern European Networking Association (CEENET) • Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe (DANTE) • Georgian Research and Educational Networking Association (GRENA) • Azerbaijan Research Educational Network Association (AZRENA) BSI Goals The project involves the development of strategies for interconnecting the existing infrastructures in the region, realization of the connections and supplying operational support for the established network. The existence of interconnections between the South Caucasus countries and connection to GÉANT2 with reasonable capacities will enable introduction of new services to the region and will be an important step towards the integration of the scientific potential in the region with Europe. BSI Objectives 1/3 Building a proper regional research and education network among South Caucasus and connecting it to GÉANT2 BSI will offer a minimum of 34 Mbps connection capacity for each beneficiary to the regional network backbone and a minimum of 100 Mbps capacity between the regional backbone and GÉANT2 The need for stable operation and interoperability with GÉANT2 will emerge after building the regional network and the interconnections BSI will supply a platform for the currently on going ICT projects in the region (SEE-GRID-SCI, e-learning e.t.c) BSI Objectives 2/3 The project will contribute to the integration of South Caucasus scientific potential to Europe by successfully disseminating the infrastructure and promoting the ICT projects in South Caucasus countries. Promote the BSI infrastructure Disseminate FP7 and other funding resources for ICT based projects Assists in UNESCO, NATO, European Investment Bank resourcesfor upgrading national infra BSI Objectives 3/3 Foster collaboration between homogenous scientific communities BSI intends identify the involved communities in the region, capture their requirements and analyse the results Establish mechanisms for knowledge transfer BSI Connection BSI Expected Gain The expected gain from many scientific research and eductional projects such as “Development of eSocieties in South Caucasus” and SEE-GRID-SCI would go one step further with the implementation of BSI project. Dissemination activities will promote widespread use of the BSI infrastructure by all members and all disciplines of the regional research and education community; liaise with other pan-European efforts with similar or adjacent objectives
