Relational Resilience - DM North High School

RELATIONAL RESILIENCE
Skinny Day 1 – March 27th
WHAT IS RELATIONAL RESILIENCE?
 Relational Resilience comes from
the knowledge that others depend
on you, and the support you feel
from others.
 When someone depends on you it
makes you stronger and makes you
work harder.
 You will understand the
components of a healthy
relationship
 You will be able to state what is
important to YOU in a
relationship – values and opinions
 You will be able to articulate
concrete ways to improve upon
negative situations
TODAY’S ACTIVITY
 You will see that each corner of your classroom is numbered one through four.
 You will be given a scenario to consider. After readying the scenario you will need
to show how you would respond to the situation by choosing the corner of the
room that corresponds with your answer. For example: if your answer is #4 then
you would go and stand in the corner of your classroom that has the #4 sign.
 Ready … ??
I CHEATED ON MY BOYFRIEND BECAUSE THE RELATIONSHIP HAD BECOME
SO PREDICTABLE AND I NEEDED SOME EXCITEMENT. HE NEVER FOUND
OUT AND I’M NOT SURE IF I SHOULD TELL HIM.
Choice 1 – Come clean and tell your boyfriend the truth.
Choice 2 – Tell him you’re bored and try to improve your relationship.
Choice 3 – Do nothing, what he doesn’t know can’t hurt him.
Choice 4 – Break up – face it, it’s over.
MY BEST FRIEND HAS STARTED DATING THIS MUCH OLDER GUY, SHE’S 15 AND
HE’S 25. SHE SAYS SHE LIKES HIM BECAUSE HE’S MORE MATURE THAN THE
BOYS OUR AGE, HE BUYS HER STUFF AND HE HAS A CAR. I HAVE A REALLY BAD
FEELING ABOUT THIS GUY. I DON’T KNOW IF I SHOULD TELL HER WHAT I THINK.
Choice 1 – Stay out of it, it’s none of your business.
Choice 2 –You should tell her your concerns about him being so much older
than her, she is your best friend.
Choice 3 – What this guy is doing is illegal! You should tell her parents.
Choice 4 – Go straight to the guy and ask him what he wants with your
friend.
YOU HAVE ASKED YOUR TEACHER IF YOU CAN COME AFTER SCHOOL AND MAKE UP
A TEST. YOUR TEACHER SAID THAT SHE WILL MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR HER
HUSBAND TO PICK UP HER CHILD AT DAYCARE SO SHE CAN STAY AND GIVE YOU THE
TEST. HOWEVER, AFTER SCHOOL YOU REALIZE IT IS A BEAUTIFUL DAY OUTSIDE AND
ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS ARE GOING TO THE PARK RIGHT AFTER SCHOOL TO HANG
OUT.
Choice 1 –You stay after school and retake your test. You appreciate that your
teacher made special arrangements to help you.
Choice 2 – You go and talk with your teacher and see if you can retake the test
tomorrow.
Choice 3 –You go in and take the test very quickly – knowing that you will not do
well on the test but you will be able to join your friends sooner.
Choice 4 – Don’t go to take the test and don’t tell your teacher that you are not
staying.
YOU HAVE JOINED THE TRACK TEAM AND WILL BE RUNNING VARSITY. YOU HAVE BEEN PRACTICING WITH
THE TEAM EVERY DAY BUT YOU FEEL LIKE YOU COULD REALLY USE A DAY TO RELAX AFTER SCHOOL. YOU
KNOW THAT IF YOU MISS PRACTICE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO RUN IN THE MEET NEXT WEEK.
Choice 1 – Go to practice even though you don’t feel like it.
Choice 2 – Tell your coach that you have had a family emergency and you have to
go home and babysit (even though you don’t)
Choice 3 – Don’t go to practice and be ready to accept the consequence of not
running in the meet next week.
Choice 4 – Don’t go to practice and don’t let your coach know – thinking that you
will still be able to participate in the meet because you are the fastest runner on the
team.
YOUR PARENTS HAVE GIVEN YOU PERMISSION TO GO TO THE MALL AND HANG OUT WITH YOUR FRIENDS.
WHEN YOU MEET YOUR FRIENDS AT THE BUS STOP YOU FIND OUT THAT THEY ARE NOT PLANNING TO GO TO
THE MALL BUT THEY ARE GOING TO ANOTHER FRIEND’S HOUSE WHERE THE PARENTS ARE NOT HOME. YOU
KNOW THAT YOUR PARENTS WOULD NOT GIVE YOU PERMISSION TO GO TO THIS HOUSE. YOU LOST TRACK
OF TIME AND YOU GOT HOME 2 HOURS LATER THAN YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BE HOME. WHAT DO YOU
TELL YOUR PARENTS?
Choice 1 – Text your parents right away when you realize that your plans have
changed and ask for permission to go to the friend’s house.
Choice 2 - Tell your parents right when you get home that you made a mistake and
you went to a friends house without permission.
Choice 3 – Make up a lie and tell your parents that you have been at the mall but
didn’t find anything that you wanted to buy.
Choice 4 - Don’t say anything and hope that they never find out.
FIND A PARTNER AND DISCUSS THE FOLLOWING
QUESTIONS. BE READY TO SHARE YOUR
ANSWERS WITH THE CLASS.
 Who do you depend on for support and how do they support you?
 How does this person motivate you to do better – to be better?
