Dear Parent/Carer
We have been trialling a new behaviour system in year 8 which has replaced the ‘pink slip’
system. It has been successful and so, with some minor adjustments, we will now trial it
across the school from Monday 5th June 2017.
The new system seeks to ensure that there are rewards for excellent behaviour for learning,
as well as sanctions imposed for poor behaviour.
At GCMS, we have high-expected standards of behaviour, which are generally adhered to
by all pupils. As with many schools however, we do find ourselves dealing with ‘low
level’ disruption, which impedes the learning of the individual and their classmates. There
is a concern that as pupils move from lesson to lesson, this low-level disruption is repeated
by the same individual but staff could treat this as the ‘first offence’.
The new system is based on coloured cards:Sanction Cards:
Yellow
Warning
Red
Sent off
Reward Cards:
Silver
Exceeding expectation
Gold
Exceptional performance
Where a child disrupts the learning environment a verbal reminder will be given. If the
behaviour persists, a verbal warning will be given. Should the behaviour continue, a
yellow card will be stapled into the child’s planner. This yellow card will follow the child
to the next 3 lessons. The staff member will note on the yellow card why it has been given
and input the information onto our ‘Behaviour Tracker’. This card will be presented to the
member of staff at the start of the next 3 lessons. If the behaviour is as it should be, this
will be recorded on the card. The card will be returned by the child to their form tutor,
who will discuss it with them and file the card.
If, however, the child continues with negative behaviour that disrupts learning, a red card
will be issued. This will be referred to the year leader who will organise an internal
exclusion.

Contact will be made with home to inform you of what has happened.
Should a child accumulate 3 yellow cards within a 2 week period this will cause the form
tutor to issue a red card where the same procedure will be followed.
In exceptional cases, it may be that an immediate red card is issued. This may be for
violence, destruction of property, racism or homophobia.
Where a child’s behaviour for learning exceeds expectations, a silver card will be awarded.
This will follow the same procedure as a yellow card. If the child continues to go above
and beyond, a gold card will be awarded.
A gold card will be referred to the Head of Year who will contact home. The child will be
rewarded with house points and a privilege pass. A certificate will also be awarded in
assembly.
Accumulating 3 silver cards will result in a gold card being rewarded.
We will be seeking feedback on this system towards the end of the summer term.
Thank you for your support
Yours sincerely
Mrs M Good
