Allocating Levels to Units

QMS: Calculating GLH/TQT for units
Estimating GLH /TQT for Qualifications
The time a student could reasonably expect to be taught, to study for and to be assessed in a qualification. These

Rationale for estimate of TQT – include here any assumptions made about the learner and evidence of any experience
gained delivering similar qualifications, how the hours were agreed above and including discussions held

Notes.
1. The typical learner
Estimated hours should be based on a notional learner who meets all accessibility requirements for the
qualification but has no prior learning that overlaps with any of the content of the qualification being assessed.
2. Distance learning and e-learning
These course will have low GL hours. If the assessment is not done via invigilated examination and if there is
no direct support from a tutor (on-line or face to face) then it is possible that a Unit or the whole qualification
may have a zero GL rating.
3. Distance learning with optional support
Where direct support from a tutor (on-line or face to face) is an optional component of the course, the GL figure
should reflect the estimated time that a typical learner is expected to spend accessing that direct support,
rounded up to the nearest whole number of hours.
