In September 2009, the NC AWWA-WEA Board of Trustees established the NC Safewater Endowment Program for the purpose of promoting safe water, increasing knowledge and understanding of safe water, and preserving and enhancing the water environment. Since the inception of the Endowment Program, the Endowment Committee and other volunteers have worked diligently to solicit donations to fund it. As a result of these efforts, the NC Safewater Endowment Program plans to award a total of more than $14,000 in scholarships and grants in 2017. Individual scholarships are listed below along with a very brief list of qualifications. More detailed descriptions and an application for each scholarship and can be found at www.ncsafewater.org/Scholarships. We invite you to review each of the available opportunities and apply for those for which you meet the stipulated qualifications. ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY MARCH 23, 2017. The Carol Bond Fund Community College Students Scholarship - $1,000 Awarded to a community college student who is pursuing a degree in Environmental Sciences or Environmental Education at a community college in North Carolina during the 2017-2018 academic year. The scholarship will be awarded for one year only. A recipient is eligible to apply for the scholarship for each subsequent year until they graduates. The Carol Bond Fund/The Lynn and Lars Balck Water Environmental Stewardship Fund/The Rivers & Associates, Inc. Clean Water Education Fund Scholarship - $2,000 In 2017 funds will be combined to award this scholarship to a rising junior who is majoring in engineering with a concentration in the water environment in an ABET accredited curriculum at one of the UNC campuses during the 2017-2018 academic year. The scholarship may be renewed annually through two years of post-graduate school degree study as long as the recipient continues to satisfy the requirements stipulated. The Environmental Manufacturer’s Representative Scholarship Fund Scholarship - 1,000 Awarded to a student studying engineering with a concentration in the water environment in an ABET accredited engineering curriculum at one of the UNC campuses during the 2017-2018 academic year. This is a multi-year scholarship that can be renewed if the student continues to meet the qualifications stipulated. The Frank and Susan Stephenson Water Environmental Scholarship Fund Scholarship – $1,000 Awarded to a first year freshman who is studying engineering or science with a concentration in the water environment in an ABET accredited engineering curriculum or a science curriculum at one of the UNC campuses during the 2017-2018 academic year. The scholarship may be renewed annually, not to exceed four years, if the student continues to quality for the scholarship. The Les and Elaine Hall Water Environmental Stewardship Fund Scholarship - $1,000 Student must be a rising junior and studying engineering with a concentration in the water environment in an ABET accredited engineering curriculum at one of the UNC Campuses during the 2017-2018 academic year. The scholarship may be awarded annually to the recipient through their Junior and Senior years and for up to two years of postgraduate studies in the water environment, as long as they continues to meet the qualifications stipulated. The NC Safewater Fund/GHD Clean Water Fund Scholarship - $2,000 NC AWWA-WEA 2016-2017 NC Safewater Fund Available Scholarships & Grants Page 1 of 2 NC AWWA-WEA 3725 National Drive, Suite 217 Raleigh, NC 27612 (919) 784-9030 www.ncsafewater.org Applicant must be a first-year graduate student who is studying engineering with a concentration in the water environment in an ABET accredited engineering curriculum at a North Carolina University during the 2017-2018 academic year. Scholarship can be continued through completion of graduate studies as long as the recipient meets the qualifications stipulated. The NC Safewater Fund Scholarship – 2,000 Awarded to a student who is pursuing a degree in a curriculum that emphasizes the protection of public health by providing healthful drinking water and/or protecting the quality and integrity of the water environment at an institution of higher education located in North Carolina during the 2017-2018 academic year. Once the scholarship is awarded to a student, they are eligible to receive it annually, for a maximum of four years to complete their undergraduate degree and/or for a maximum of two years to complete their graduate degree as long as they continue to meet the qualifications stipulated in the initial award. The Crowder Construction Company Scholarship Fund Scholarship – 1,000 Student must be a full time student during the 2017-2018 academic year who has completed one full year of course work at an accredited college with a career goal of working in the field of Water and Wastewater Construction. Applicants must have a desire to pursue a career in construction with a degree in a construction related program such as: construction management, construction science, construction technology, construction safety, engineering or architecture. The scholarship can be awarded annually to the recipient through their senior year as long as they continues to meet the qualifications stipulated in the initial award. Raftelis Financial Consultants Environmental Finance and Management Fund Scholarship – 1,000 Applicant must be a student who is pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree with a concentration in environmental finance, environmental management, or related disciplines, in an accredited institution of higher education during the 20172018 academic year. The scholarship will be awarded annually to the student through the completion of their undergraduate degree and/or graduate degree as long as they continues to meet the qualifications stipulated in the initial award of the scholarship. Raftelis Foundation Elementary Education Scholarship - $1,000 The scholarship program focuses on funding competitive financial awards to elementary educators that have as a major objective, educating elementary students. The amount of the scholarship will depend on the cost of the project(s) selected. The Carol Bond Fund Scholarship for Middle and High School Environmental Educators - $1,000 The scholarship program focuses on funding competitive financial awards to educators that have as a major objective, educating middle and high school students. The amount of the scholarship will depend on the cost of the project(s) selected. AWWA One Operator Scholarship - $2,000 AWWA’s The Water Equation Campaign and the NC Section of AWWA, will award up to $2,000 One AWWA Operator Scholarships for Water Operator training and education. The denominations of the awards will be announced in the scholarship application. Scholarship awards can be used for certification/licensure, two-year water related associate degree, technical school program, professional training program, books and manuals, and operator related conferences.
