Telephone- Everyone sits in a line, and the first person whispers something
in the ear of the student next to them. The message continues down the line
until the very last player announces the message that they heard to the
entire group.
Captain’s Coming- One player or the leader is assigned as ‘Captain’. Their
role is to call out actions and dismiss players who break character or don’t
do actions quickly enough. Possible commands are:
• Captain's Coming: Everyone stands at "attention" (in a salute), and they
can’t move from this position until the caller says, "At Ease!" If they
laugh or break from the attention, they are dismissed.
• To the ship: Players run to the right.
• To the shore: Players run to the left.
• Man Overboard: One person drops to one knee the other stands behind
them, puts a hand on their shoulder. Both scan the ocean for the
overboard man.
• Crow’s Nest: Three players stand backs to each other and lock arms at the
elbows to form the crow’s nest.
• Mess Table: Four players squat in a circle like sitting at table and pretend
to eat like they haven't eaten in days.
• Walk the Plank: Five people stand in a single file row hands on the
shoulders of person in front of them.
• Mermaid: each player individually thrust out right hip, places right hand on
that hip, takes left hand and makes a big exaggerated wave and yells
out "howdy sailor!".
Poison Dart Frog- All students stand in a circle with one student in the
middle, everyone closes their eyes. The leader walks around and taps 1 or 2
students depending on group size. These students become the poison dart
frogs. Their job is to ‘attack’ other players by making eye contact with the
person and quickly sticking their tongue out at other people. All students
must consistently look around and make eye contact with other members of
the circle. If a dart frog sticks your tongue out at you, you dramatically die.
The person in the middle is meant to guess who the poison dart frog is in
three guesses or less. If they cannot identify them, the poison dart frog
wins.
Car Lot- Two players are selected to be It and a category is chosen (fruit,
cars, candy, etc.). The players who are It stand in the center of the playing
field, while all other players line up on one end. Each student chooses 3
items within the category to ‘be’. The It players yell out 3 items within the
category, and whichever students picked one of the 3 must run across the
playing field trying to avoid being tagged. If they are tagged they must sit
down where they are tagged and try to tag other players, when they do they
can get up and return to play. Game ends when only one student is left
standing.
Balloon Races- Tie one end of a string to a support (chair, door knob, etc.)
and put the other end through a straw. Pull the string tight and tie it to
another support. Blow up the balloon (but don’t tie) and tape the balloon to
the straw while holding the air in. Let the air out after it is securely taped
and watch it launch! This can be turned into a race by starting students
balloons at the same time and seeing whose reaches the end first.
Barrel RacesDia de los Muertos Masks- Use mask templates and other various art
supplies for students to create their own Dia de los Muertos masks.
Ghosts in the Graveyard- First, select a home base for all the players to
return to and one player to be It, the ghost. The ghost must hide while all
other players count to 50. Their goal is to find the ghost, and when they do
they shout “Ghost in the graveyard!!”. When the players hear this their goal
is to run to the home base as quickly as possible without being tagged by
the ghost (the person who found the ghost is safe from tagging). Whoever
the ghost tags first is the ghost in the next round. If the ghost is unable to
tag anyone they are the ghost again in the next round.
Pumpkin Lanterns- Using orange paper,
1. Cut a 1-inch wide strip off of one long side (set this strip aside).
2. Fold the paper in half lengthwise
3. Draw a horizontal line one inch from the long edge on the
opposite side of the fold.
4. Starting from folded edge, cut a straight line from the
bottom up to the line. Continue cutting about 1-inch strips
until you reach the end.
5. Unfold the paper and erase the cutting guideline or flip the
paper inside out.
6. Draw a face on your jack-o’-lantern.
7. Form the paper into a tube and tape or staple the edges to
form a circle. Glue the strip from step 1 to create a handle.
Zombie Tag- The person who is It becomes a zombie, and anyone who is
tagged by them becomes a zombie too. The goal is to be the last human
standing. Zombies should act like one!
Tracing Fallen Leaves- Students find leaves, then place them under a
sheet of paper and gently color the whole area of paper that the leaf is
under. It will leave an impression of the entire leaf on the paper.
