Tai Chi Classes Added in Gardiner
Melissa Fairweather, Public Relations, Gardiner Library
The Gardiner Library has added a second Tai Chi class to
its schedule. Instructor Roger Bason will offer one free
introductory class on Thursday, March 27, from 1 to 2 p.m.
Mr. Bason will then teach Short Yang Form Tai Chi for ten
weeks starting Thursday, April 3 at 1 p.m. and continuing
through June 5. The cost for these sessions is $12 drop in or
$40 for four classes.
Roger Bason was introduced to the Short Yang Form of
T’ai Chi Chuan as modified by Grand Master M.C. Cheng
40 years ago. He began practice with Robert Smith in
Washington, DC and in 1975 began study with Professor
Patrick Watson in New York City with the School of T’ai
Chi Chuan. He worked directly with Patrick Watson for 17
years. Mr. Bason has taught the Tai Chi form at over a dozen
colleges and universities including Princeton University,
Bennington College and the University of Massachusetts
(Dartmouth). He has taught classes to the general public in
New York City, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Washington,
DC, Los Angeles, CA, New Mexico and Hawaii (Kaua’i).
The library also offers Tai Chi classes on Wednesday
mornings at 11 a.m. with instructor Joseph Bergin. These
classes, which started in September 2012, also cost $12 for
drop in or $40 for four classes. Part of the proceeds from
each class benefits the library. All classes take place in the
library Community Room. For directions or further
information call 255-1255 or visit the Gardiner Library’s
website.

Barbara Bush
Foundation Celebrates
25 Years
In 1989, then–First Lady Barbara
Bush founded the Barbara Bush
Foundation for Family Literacy to fund
programs that teach parents in lowincome families to read and pass on a
love of reading to their children. As the
foundation celebrated its silver
anniversary March 6, Bush said the goal
of the foundation has been consistent: to
help mothers realize their strength as
their child’s first teacher. Today, the
organization funds 1,500 literacy
programs in all 50 states with grants
from $25,000 to $125,000. Visit the
USA Today website to read more.
