Team Managers guidelines for relay selection

DIAMOND VALLEY LITTLE ATHLETICS CENTRE
AGE CO-ORDINATORS’ PROCEDURES FOR RELAY TEAM SELECTION
Relays are a very important part of athletics where great fun, pride and learning of skills can be
fostered in a team environment. These procedures attempt to gain a balance between elite
performance, participation and most importantly fun. However, this document also recognises the
important role the Age Co-ordinator plays in team formation, training and results. This document
does not take away from that role, but rather gives procedures for team selection in order to make
that process transparent and defensible.
Points for relay selection:
1. All athletes are encouraged to participate in relays.
2. All athletes are encouraged to train each relay session.
3. Athletes will have up to 2 weeks before the Region Relays to achieve a performance which will
be used for team selection. Times may also be sourced from non-DVLAC competitions as long as
the times are automatic timing (gun to gate) and are published as official results on the relevant
association’s website. No hand-held times will be accepted nor will verbally supplied times be
accepted.
4. Baton skills are also an important skill for athletes to posses in order to be included in a Relay
Team selection. Baton skills can be improved by attending relay training.
5. 4 x 100m - For Relay Team selection for single sex events, the top 4 or 5 athletes (depending on
athlete numbers) on 100 metre times for the season, will make up the A team. The next 4 or 5
athletes will make up the B team and so on. For mixed sex teams, the top 2 or 3 athletes
(depending on athlete numbers) on 100 metre times for the season, in each sex, will make up the
A team. The next 2 or 3 athletes in each sex will make up the B team and so on.
6. 4 x 200m - For Relay Team selection for single sex events, the top 4 or 5 athletes (depending on
athlete numbers) on 200 metre times for the season, will make up the A team. The next 4 or 5
athletes will make up the B team and so on. For mixed sex teams, the top 2 or 3 athletes
(depending on athlete numbers) on 200 metre times for the season, in each sex, will make up the
A team. The next 2 or 3 athletes in each sex will make up the B team and so on.
7. Medley - For Relay Team selection for the medley event, the top 4 or 5 athletes (depending on
athlete numbers) on 100, 200 and 400 metre times for the season, will make up the A team. The
next 4 or 5 athletes will make up the B team and so on.
8. To be eligible for selection to the highest ranked team, the athlete must attend most Team and
Centre designated training sessions. Non-attendance without a valid excuse can result in
placement in a lower ranked team.
9. In the event of a dispute between Team Coaches or Team Coaches and parents, the Age Coordinator will have the final say as to the composition of the team and the events the team will
target. If necessary, the dispute will then be adjudicated by members of the DVLAC Executive
(Team Managers, President, Secretary or Treasurer).
