We were able to hold a very successful swimming carnival last week

Newsletter No 3
25th February 2016
Dear Families of St Peter’s,
We were able to hold a very successful swimming carnival last week for our Year 3 to
6 Students. Congratulations to all students who competed and swam their very best for
their team. I would like to say a big thank you to all staff and parents, especially the
P&F Association, for helping with the carnival, food preparation and service. Without
your support the carnival would not have been possible. Special thanks to our PE
Teacher Mrs Gayle Dinnen, who through her exceptional organisation and attention to
detail, did a wonderful job at coordinating and organising this year's carnival. Gayle
was helped significantly by parents from the Rochedale Rays, Mr Tony Murphy and
Mr Ben Johnson, I extend my thanks to them on your behalf. We sincerely appreciate
being able to use the Rochedale Rays Swimming Club timing equipment also.

Thank you for your support and cooperation today with the scheduled Industrial
Action. While I am sorry that this action disrupted our usual school routine, I respect
the right of employees to take appropriate industrial action.
We keep the following people in our prayers and ask for God’s blessing on them especially
this week ~ Mr Catterson (2A) and his wife on the birth of their son, Aidan, today may his life be filled
with many blessings
The following issues were discussed at the Parent Information Evenings recently. I
print them here for the benefit of families who could not attend.
Compliments, Concerns, Complaints,
We aim to work in partnership with you, the parents and to do this well, honest, open
communication is the key. At all times your concerns will be treated confidentially
and we ask the same from you. The class teacher is your first point of contact when
you need to discuss any issues relating to the class. Once you have met with the class
teacher you may wish to discuss any unresolved issues with Mr Campbell, Mrs
Cridland, Mr Rees and I.
Technology use in our community
We aim as parents and teachers to educate our children on the responsible use of
technology. With so many technical devices (laptop computers, iPads, camera, smart
phones) in the school and home there can be a temptation to take lots of photos and /
or make comments on social media.
As parents we need to be mindful that we also should not post anything that we don’t
have permission for eg photos of your child/children at school events with other
children in the picture.
Taking photos of other children (even in the background of a photo shot) and tagging them without
permission is a serious breach of the Privacy Act. This is a reminder not to take photos with of your child
with other children and certainly do not mention other children or families in photo tags without their
permission.

The inaugural World Science Festival will be in Brisbane next month –
http://www.worldsciencefestival.com.au/about/world-science-festival/ . It’s an annual event, usually always in New
York but for the next 3 years Brisbane won the right to be the host.
The inaugural World Science Festival Brisbane will bring some of the world’s greatest thought leaders to Queensland,
showcase local scientists and performers from around the Asia Pacific region, and host the brightest and the best from
previous events in New York.
At the World Science Festival Brisbane, the biggest stars of science will present the beauty, complexity, and
importance of science through diverse, multidisciplinary programming that is the World Science Festival signature.
The inaugural World Science Festival Brisbane will take place between 9 and 13 March 2016 and is presented by the
Queensland Museum.
FYI: There are many educational opportunities as part of the programme http://www.worldsciencefestival.com.au/learn/education-program/. It may not be feasible to take the students to them,
but perhaps Parents could be just made aware, to take opportunity if interested…

Staff Professional Development - Prayer
This week teachers attended professional development after school on leading prayer in the classroom. Part of the
session was making a “rain stick” to use during prayer to enhance the time of silence and stillness. In a busy week
there are not many times where each of us gets to have a time of stillness and silence. Prayer is a way that Catholic’s
stop, take stock and talk with God. There are three broad types of prayer in the church. Vocal Prayers – those we say
aloud, Meditative Prayers – those we practice or do and Contemplative Prayer – being with God.
REMINDER TO ALL FAMILIES:
PREP ENROLMENTS ARE BEING TAKEN NOW FOR 2017
Prayer in the Classroom: Each Year level across Prep to Year 6 have mandated prayers that are taught and
experienced across the school. Prayer is an important part of the routine and life of a Catholic School. Prayers can be
as simple as acknowledging God in our lives by lighting a candle, breathing exercises, the Sign of the Cross,
journaling, saying a traditional prayer for eg. Hail Mary or prayers of thanks, asking or reflection.

News from Primary Learning Leader
Delivering Excellent Learning and Teaching at St.Peter’s
This year at St.Peter’s we are continuing to engage in reading and writing strategies in line with the
Reading to Learn program. As part of professional development during 2015 all classroom teachers were
mentored and trained in using this reading program. This mentoring has continued as part of our
professional learning in 2016.
The aim of Reading to Learn is to support each child to read and write challenging texts at their grade level.
Through participation in these lessons all students are provided with opportunities to develop a deeper
understanding of selected texts, and to use information, and language patterns from investigation of texts
within their own writing.
Our Reading to Learn program links directly to our learning intentions at
St.Peter’s, and the Australian Curriculum Achievement standards.
This week at St.Peter’s our classrooms have had a particular focus on collecting information about the
reading and writing progress of all students at our school. As part of this, teachers will be looking at where
the children have come from, where they are at and using informed judgements about each individual
child’s learning needs when planning short and long term learning goals. During parent teacher dialogues
at the end of this term, teachers will be sharing this information with you.
Have a good week.
Kind Regards,
Jo Cridland
Primary Learning Leader (PLL)
GUIDANCE NEWS
Stop Think Do in Grade 5
Peer friendships are very important for our personal happiness and adjustment through life. Social skills
education is a way to develop the social competence and emotional intelligence children need to make and
maintain their peer relationships, as well as to relate better to parents, teachers and all people in life.
To assist in the development of social skills and emotional intelligence, the students in Grade 5 are
participating in an 8 week program called ‘Stop Think Do’. This Australian social skills program is designed
to help children who are experiencing social, emotional and behavioural difficulties, but is also appropriate
for all children to prevent such difficulties arising. As part of the program we will be looking at


getting to know each other better

being aware of feelings

communicating feelings

solving social problems in a ‘cool’ and friendly way
Each weekly session will be facilitated by the Class Teacher, Jayne Murphy, Kathy Casley and Robert
Campbell. If you have any questions about the program you may contact me when I am at school on
Tuesdays and Thursdays and I would be happy to discuss this with you.
