November 2013 - CBS Roscommon

Senior Football
The Senior Football team have made a bright start to their Connacht B League campaign.
The team recorded comprehensive victories against Garbally College, Ballinasloe and The
Bish of Galway City in their opening two encounters. The team faced a much tougher
challenge in their third game against HRC Mountbellew. The CBS led by only two points at
half time having played with the aid of the breeze but put in a great second half
performance to emerge victorious on a score line of 3-9 to 0-10. The team face upcoming
fixtures against Aloysius, Athlone and Presentation Headford, positive results in these
fixtures should ensure a place in the league semi-final.
Maths Week 2013
CBS Roscommon recently celebrated Maths Week to show the relevance of maths to
everyday life and to experience the fun in maths. This year, a whole school approach was
taken with Maths Week, and all year groups were involved.
Activities included a daily announcement from the students of 6th, 5th, 3rd and TY classes –
each announcement highlighted an interesting maths fact and a puzzle which students were
given time to work out in class. Included in the announcements were facts like the’ letters a
b c do not appear in any number when you spell out the first 99 numbers’, and puzzles like
‘what odd number becomes even when one letter is removed’ or ‘how can you use eight 8s
to make 1,000.
First year students focused on drawing up posters to advertise the week and show how
maths can be fun, using cartoons and maths symbols in their posters. All the posters were
placed around the school to raise awareness of maths for the week.
Second year students, with the help of transition years, were given a morning of maths
activities, including a maths table quiz, problem solving activities and they were shown
videos on the use and relevant of maths to their daily lives.
Our thanks to all the students who participated in the activities and made the week a great
success in the school.

CBS 1988 Class 25 Year Reunion
The Class of 1988 recently held their 25 year reunion in the CBS Roscommon. Many
members of the class travelled from across Ireland and England to meet up in their ‘alma
mater’ and to reminisce with former teachers about their time within the school.
It was a joyous occasion for both teachers and past pupils who walked the corridors and
classrooms of the school recalling comical and joyous memories of their days in CBS.
The class of 1988 would like to thank John Wynne and Ciaran Croghan for all their hard work
in organising and gathering class together. We would also like to thank all teachers for
taking the time to and meet the class at the school.

FIRST YEARS MAKE IT THREE IN A ROW.
The CBS’s first year footballers continued their impressive league with a recent victory over
Ballyhaunis community college.
Played in Ballyhaunis in blustery conditions the CBS had started well but failed to capitalise
on their dominance after four early opportunities were driven wide. They did soon however
get off the mark with a well taken score from Ciarán Lawless. The Mayo side however would
soon make the CBS pay for their early misses with a brace of points to take the lead.
Ballyhaunis had now firmly established themselves in the game and made their ascendancy
count, raising the green flag, to race into a four point lead. Lawless reduced the deficit with
another well taken point before Ballyhaunis responded to restore their advantage. Crucially
the CBS ended the first half much the better. Lawless added to his tally before wing back
Jack McGahon pointed. Midfielder Brian O’Malley reduced the gap to one, before lawless
pointed again to level matters. Lawless then added a free to put the Roscommon side a
point to the good at the break.
Despite the tight nature of the opening half the CBS were completely dominant in the
second. Excellent early pressure saw points added form forward Tim Lambe and a well taken
goal from Cian Murray. Ciarán McCormack struck free before James Fagan added
anotherpoint to increase the lead to seven. Ballyhaunis had now faded badly and were
struggling to stay in the game. This was typified by some poor defending which allowed
Aodha Hession to hit the back of the net before a long range effort from O’Malley dipped
beneath the crossbar. These scores effectively ended the game as a contest. Lawless added
three more well taken points and another two from Fagan and Lambe saw the game finish
Ballyhaunis Community College 1-3 Roscommon CBS 4-14. Well done all.
DOODLE 4 GOOGLE
Transition year students are currently in the midst of preparing their entries for the
Doodle4Google contest. The Doodle4Google competition offers students an exciting
opportunity to design their own ‘doodle’ which might be displayed on the Google home
page. 300 semi finalists will be selected from all school levels with 75 finalists progressing to
the public vote. The overall winner receives a €5000 scholarship. This year’s theme is “My
Adventure” which allows student plenty of scope to design a winning doodle.
Team Hope Christmas Shoe Box Appeal.
First, Second and Third year students from Ms. Daly’s and Mr. Moran’s Religion classes
participated in this year’s Team Hope Christmas Shoe Box Appeal.
The Christmas Shoe Box Appeal is for an extremely worthy cause where children are
victims of war, disease and poverty. For these children Christmas does not exist! The
Christmas Shoe Boxes which our students donated will indeed bring a lot of laughter
and smiles to these forgotten children who have very little.
Our students shoe boxes contained a generous selection of various gifts from every day
essentials to that of small gifts. There was a brilliant turnout of Christmas Shoe Boxes
from students this year. Also our Transition year students are presently volunteering in
the checking of boxes to make sure that boxes meet all regulations.
Once again a huge thank you and well done to all our students and their families and our
teachers who got involved in this year’s activity! We truly hope that the children who
receive these boxes will have something to remember for years to come.
