EHS Rules To Live By

EHS Rules To Live By Tool Box Meeting
Whether they are known as Golden Rules, Cardinal Rules or Rules to Live By, cornerstone rules which
govern safe behaviour are imperative to our business, and must be observed in every area of our
operations. Following the launch of the SMC EHS Rules to Live by, we must ask questions about the impact
EHS Rules will have to our business, and what we expect to change in our processes and behaviours to
respect and adhere to these rules.
Team Discussion Exercise | Let's Review the Rules
Begin an open discussion of the EHS Rules and what they mean to your site. Use the questions below to
generate discussion with your team members and jot down some of your responses. Use a standard
toolbox meeting template to ensure that you close out all the outcomes.
Question
Firstly the “dare to declare” question.
- Do you find that you have unwittingly
broken some of these rules?
- How do your current processes help you to
comply or prevent you from complying?
- How does this shift your idea of safe
behaviour?
- Do you need any of the rules clarified?
- If so… who will you ask for this advice?
How do the Rules affect your daily work?
- Will your work flow or process be positively
or negatively affected?
- How will they contribute to making the
workplace safer?
Will you need to consider a review of risk around
the site? For example consider these areas….
- Plant, does it comply?
- Equipment, is it still going to be safe?
- Processes, are they still correct?
- PPE – does it still meet the requirement and
do you have enough?
- Proximity and Layout, is it optimum?
