Ras Al Hamra Boat Club
2006 Annual Regatta
Surfin’ Turtles by a single point. Team Dayaks took third place.
Volker Vahrenkamp and Mike Kramer won the much-coveted
trophy for the fastest lap around Fahal Island in just under 48
minutes, beating the rest of the field by more than 5 minutes. To
further entertain the non-sailing participants a Jeu de Boules
competition was organized with first and second prize going to
team Dayats-1 and Dayats-2 respectively. This favourite pass
time of the French involves two teams of three players, who
each try to throw a metal ball as close as possible to a small
target ball (the Jack) over a distance of 5 to 10 meters. It is a

perfect conditions the Ras Al
Hamra Boat Club Annual
Regatta was held on March
9th and 10th. Although
primarily focused on sailing,

provided
entertainment for sailors and
non-sailors of all ages. This
has made it into a great
family attraction over the
years. Next to the teams
from the Rash Al Hamra
Boat Club there were entries from as far a field as Dubai and
Sur. A total of twelve teams competed in the Hobie-16
catamaran class, sailing fourteen races over two days, including
two races around Fahal island. Each race was a pursuit race
with boats starting from the beach in reversed order of the finish
of the previous race. This led to strong competition and
provided equal opportunities to all teams to win the overall
event. Races were also organized in the Topper class for 10-14
year old children and in the Optimist class for 7-10 year old
children on both days. In addition a beach volleyball
competition was held which once more resulted in an all-Omani
final. After drawing a set each, final victory was secured by PDO
Drilling-2 team, beating last year’s winners PDO Drilling-1 in a
5-0 tiebreak. The Hobie-16 sailing competition went to the wire
with team Muscats-2 securing the overall victory over the
