On-Going: Team/Review Captain Training Requirements Starting: May 1, 2016 *Requirement must be met prior to May 1, 2016: To maintain the qualifications of a team captain or of a review captain, you should participate in one of the following peer review training options within twelve months prior to the commencement of a review. Peer Review training options for all Team/Review Captains 1. Attending the general session of the annual Peer Review Conference. (2015-New Orleans) 2. Completing the On Demand Peer Review Update Course This course is an advanced reviewer training course that will be updated annually and cover recent changes to peer review guidance in addition to how recent changes in auditing or accounting standards impact peer review. This course will contain a final exam that is designed to meet the NASBA CPE Standards. i. AICPA Member: $49 ii. Non-AICPA Member: $59 3. Attend an alternative course or conference session that has been approved by the Peer Review Board. For purposes of the ongoing training requirement, these alternative courses and conference session will be selected by the AICPA Peer Review Board. The Board will not consider courses submitted by reviewers seeking consideration for an alternative course of their choosing. 1/28/15: There are no alternative conference sessions or courses that have been approved by the PRB. Must-Select Industry: Reviewer Training Requirements Starting: May 1, 2016 Requirement must be met prior to May 1, 2016: Participate in one of the following peer review training options within one year prior to the commencement of a review for which you intend to review an engagement in the must-select industry. At this time, the must-select training requirement only applies to engagements subject to Government Auditing Standards and Employee Benefit Plan engagements. Peer Review training options for Must-Select 1. Participating in the relevant optional session of the annual Peer Review Conference- New Orleans 2015 2. Completing the relevant Peer Review Industry Update on-demand self-study course. Must-Select Update Course - Governmental Must-Select Update Course - Employee Benefit Plan i. AICPA Member: $49 ii. Non-AICPA Member: $59 3. REMINDER: Users of the AICPA PRP Manual; Team/Review Captain Packages If you (or firms you peer review) access the Peer Review Program Manual (PRPM), Team and Review Captain Checklists (including engagement checklists, the Summary Review Memorandum, Review Captain Summary, Profiles and Practice Management Toolkits), from the Peer Review webpage, you should know that the Team and Review Captain Checklist will no longer be available after late January 2016. Content that will remain available to the public-as detailed here-includes the Standards, Interpretations, Report Acceptance Body Handbook and the Quality Control Policy and Procedure Questionnaires. Initial Qualification to become a reviewer after May 1, 2016 1. Complete the online peer reviewer curriculum "Becoming an AICPA Peer Review Team or Review Captain". The online peer reviewer curriculum is a series of modules that are similar to self-study ondemand courses. This curriculum will be available at cpa2biz.com. Each module will contain a final exam that is designed to comply with NASBA CPE Standards. 2. Complete the "Becoming an AICPA Peer Review Team or Review Captain: Case Study Applications" in a live seminar format. This course features realistic case studies that encompass the most important elements of a system review, as well as several case studies pertaining to an engagement review. Must be completed within the 12 months after completion of the peer reviewer curriculum. Live seminar training offered by the State CPA societies cannot be posted until after April 1 in any given year Additional information on Initial Qualification Requirements Effective December 31, 2015 1. Reviewers must be associated with an AQC firm (currently EBPAQC and GAQC). 2. Reviewers must update their resume under practice areas and check industry codes for new A Code requirements. Reviewers should consider whether their day-to-day involvement with A&A work is sufficiently comprehensive to enable them to perform a peer review with professional expertise. Reviewers must be currently involved in must-select engagements in their own firms. 3. In order to meet the requirement to possess current knowledge of professional standards applicable to the kind of practice to be reviewed, including quality control and peer review standards, all peer reviewers should: Obtain at least 40% of the AICPA required CPE in subjects relating to accounting, auditing, and quality control. Peer reviewers should obtain at least 8 hours in any 1 year and 48 hours every 3 years. 4. Reviewers must have spent the last five years in the A&A function of public accounting.
